GAME RECAP

The Dallas Mavericks ended a 10-game losing streak with a 93-91 victory over the Toronto Raptors, who saw their franchise-record losing streak grow to 12 games when a three-pointer by Shawn Respert missed at the buzzer.

Dennis Scott scored 15 of his 21 points on three-pointers and Australian rookie center Chris Anstey triggered a late surge with four points for the Mavericks, who ended their 11th double-digit losing streak since 1991.

"The win was a total team effort and we played well throughout," Mavericks coach Jim Cleamons said. "We need to work on our shot selection. There are some things that we'll get better doing as time goes on."

Dallas won for the first time since its home opener on November 4th. The Mavs nearly blew an eight-point lead in the final three minutes, but survived when Damon Stoudamire missed a drive and Respert misfired from the right wing in the waning seconds.

"We had a nice look at the end -- in and out," Raptors coach Darrell Walker said. "Basically, that's how our season has been thus far. We missed 10 (actually 11) free throws. You can't do that and expect to win basketball games."

Doug Christie scored 27 points and John Wallace added 21 and 10 rebounds for the Raptors (1-14), whose only win came November 4th against Golden State. Stoudamire was 1-of-10 from the field and scored just six points.

Toronto took its last lead, 82-81, on a jumper by Wallace with 7:35 to play. But Anstey, who had scored just four points in his first five games, responded with an 18-footer from the corner and two free throws, giving Dallas an 85-82 edge with 5:34 left.

"Hitting the big jumpers down the stretch helped my confidence and it gave the team a spark of energy as well," Anstey said.

Scott's fifth three-pointer capped the 11-2 surge and gave the Mavs a 92-84 advantage with 3:13 remaining. But Dallas managed only a free throw by Erick Strickland and barely held on.

Christie made a 20-footer at the 2:42 mark and Stouadamire sank three free throws before his driving layup cut the deficit to 92-91 with 13 seconds remaining. Strickland split two foul shots two seconds later, setting up the final sequence.

Michael Finley scored 15 points and Samaki Walker added career highs of 14 and 10 boards for the Mavericks, who shot 47 percent (39-of-83) from the field and held a 47-45 rebounding edge.

The 7-foot Anstey, the 18th overall pick in the draft, scored six points in eight minutes. He and Walker filled in for 7-6 Shawn Bradley, who scored 12 points but suffered a strained left calf and sat out most of the second half. He is expected to be out two weeks.

"It felt well to get some playing time when the game was meaningful," Anstey said. "I got some positive minutes tonight and made the most of the opportunities."

"Samaki played very well for us tonight," Cleamons said. "He got good rebounds and gave us energy on the floor. He found the open spot in the rotation and played well in the paint."

Popeye Jones collected 12 points and nine rebounds and Reggie Slater also had 12 points for the Raptors, who shot 44 percent (38-of-86) and committed only seven turnovers. Toronto was just 10-of-21 from the line.

"It's tough when both teams are struggling and have long losing streaks," said Jones, a former Mav. "We both know that we have losing streaks and we're both trying hard to get a win. That's where the mistakes come in."

Christie scored 11 points in the first quarter as Toronto took a 24-21 lead. Dallas scored the first four points of the second period, but Christie scored six in a 19-7 run that gave the Raptors their largest lead. A tip-in by Jones made it 43-32 with 3:41 before halftime.

Helped by five points by Khalid Reeves, the Mavs closed the quarter with a 10-1 burst, cutting the deficit to 44-42 at the half.

Scott made four three-pointers in the third quarter as both teams picked up the pace. The Raptors took a 75-73 lead into the final 12 minutes.

Center Oliver Miller, signed by the Raptors earlier in the day, had two points and four rebounds in 12 minutes.
