GAME RECAP

John Starks scored 14 of his 22 points in the second quarter and the New York Knicks held the Phoenix Suns to a franchise-low 27 points in the first half as they breezed to a 102-80 victory.

Patrick Ewing and Allan Houston added 21 points apiece for the Knicks, who won by at least 20 points for the eighth time this season and second against the Suns. New York swept the two-game series, outscoring Phoenix by 52 points.

"I'm happy with the win," Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "This team has the third-best record in the NBA and we beat them pretty badly up there and were able to do it again."

Coming off a loss in Detroit, where they blew a 19-point lead in the third quarter, the Knicks completely shut down the Suns in the first half, holding them to 27 points and opening a 22-point advantage. New York led by double digits thereafter and cooled off Phoenix, which had won seven of eight.

"We knew we had to sustain the lead at halftime," Houston said. "We have to be more accountable for letting big leads get away. Even if our offensive flow breaks down, we have no excuse to slack off defensively and we didn't do that tonight."

Antonio McDyess, Hot Rod Williams and Jason Kidd each scored 10 points for the Suns, who matched a club record for fewest points in a half, set in the second half against Atlanta on February 24th, 1979.

A dunk by McDyess closed the deficit to 14-10 with 3:21 left in the first quarter, but the Suns went scoreless for the rest of the period, establishing a season low. Reserve center Chris Dudley scored five points in the 9-0 burst that ended the period and gave the Knicks a 23-10 lead.

Phoenix shot 26 percent (5-of-18) in the quarter, while New York shot 56 percent (10-of-18).

"They took it to us right off the bat," McDyess said. "We lost our confidence on the offensive end. We missed a lot of shots in the first quarter. I know I got frustrated out there. I should have been more aggressive."

Starks caught fire in the second quarter, when the Knicks turned it into a rout. He scored 10 points in a 16-3 spurt, including a dunk that gave New York a 47-23 lead with 1:37 remaining in the first half.

"With the type of offense we have, we can keep the pressure on because we have so many quality players off the bench," Starks said. "Against this team especially, you can open it up, but I got the feeling they didn't really want to run with us tonight. They seemed tentative."

The Knicks led 49-27 at halftime and opened their largest lead at 53-27 on a layup by Charlie Ward with 11:05 left in the third quarter. Rex Chapman scored five points in a 17-4 spurt, capped by a follow shot by Danny Manning that cut the deficit to 57-44 with 4:08 to go. But the Knicks responded with eight straight points, including four by Starks. Phoenix got no closer than 11 points thereafter.

Chris Mills scored 12 points and Ewing grabbed 11 rebounds for the Knicks, who shot 46 percent (37-of-81) from the field and held a 46-38 advantage on the glass. New York scored 30 points off 21 forced turnovers.

Kidd handed out 11 assists, but shot 3-of-14 and committed seven turnovers for the Suns, who shot under 40 percent (33-of-83) and attempted just 11 free throws. The Knicks were 25-of-29 from the line.

"We're obviously more effective when we get a lead," said Suns guard Kevin Johnson, who scored just six points. "Then we're able to establish the tempo. This team's got our number. It's good we don't have to play them too often. If we do again, it would be in the Finals, and that would be great."

"I thought we did a real good job on Kidd and KJ," Houston said.

Phoenix is averaging 77.5 points against the Knicks and 108 per game against all other teams.

"We got a lot of contributions from a lot of people and I thought defensively we played the pick-and-roll very well," Van Gundy said.
