GAME RECAP

Rookie Antonio Daniels hit a driving one-hander in the lane over Brian Williams with 3.1 seconds remaining, lifting the Vancouver Grizzlies to a 97-95 win over the Detroit Pistons and snapping a four-game losing streak.

Two free throws by Lindsey Hunter gave the Pistons a 95-95 tie with 42 seconds left. Daniels missed a three-pointer, but the rebound went out off Detroit. The inbounds pass was nearly stolen by Hunter, but his save attempt went to Vancouver's Shareef Abdur-Rahim with seven seconds to go. Abdur-Rahim gave it to Daniels, who drove right into the lane and lofted a shot over the 6-11 center.

Detroit had a chance to tie after Grant Hill was fouled by Abdur-Rahim on an inbounds pass with 2.1 seconds left. But Hill, a 76 percent foul shooter, missed his first attempt before intentionally missing his second shot. He battled for the rebound as the clock wound down and Hunter finally gained possession of the loose ball, but the clock expired before he could get off a shot.

"I missed the final shot in the first game of the season against the Clippers and I said then I wanted the chance again," said Daniels. "Tonight I had the opportunity and came through. On the last play there were a lot of options. Once I got past Grant Hill my only thought was to get it up on the rim and hope it goes in. If not, maybe there's a rebound."

"I'm trying to figure out more adjectives to describe how we've been playing. I'm baffled. I don't know what to say," said Grant Hill. "I'll take the responsibility for the free throws but Vancouver had five games in eight days and we're playing catch-up against them.

Abdur-Rahim scored 19 points and Bryant Reeves had 18 and eight rebounds to lead the Grizzlies, who salvaged a win on the last stop of a five-game road trip, improving to 2-8 on the road.

"We really needed this win. It's at the end of a long road trip and it'll make the flight back seem a lot shorter," Adbur-Rahim said. "When you're losing like this, guys get down on each other. Antonio showed a lot of heart. Anytime a player is willing to take those kind of shots it says a lot about him. It doesn't make him tough because he made it, it makes him tough because he took it."

Otis Thorpe grabbed 10 rebounds and Lee Mayberry handed out eight assists as Vancouver (7-11) swept the season series from Detroit. The Grizzlies beat the Pistons 104-96 in overtime in Vancouver on November 9th.

Williams had 26 points and nine boards and Hunter added 22 points for the Pistons (6-11), who have not won back-to-back games since opening the season with consecutive victories.

The Grizzlies did not win their seventh game last season until January 8th. The Pistons did not lose their 11th game until January 22nd.

Detroit struggled with its shooting, hitting only 43 percent (37-for-87) from the field, including 21 percent (3-for-14) from three-point range. Vancouver countered by shooting 59 percent (38-for-65).

"You look at the stat sheet and we got 87 shots, more free throws, more rebounds and forced 25 turnovers," said Detroit coach Doug Collins. "The big difference was they shot 59 percent. Fundamental mistakes that I talked about two weeks ago are still haunting us."

Vancouver outscored Detroit 33-22 in the second quarter to take a 53-49 lead at the half.

A layup by Reeves with 11:17 remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Grizzlies an 81-71 bulge. Detroit fought back to tie it, 91-91, with two free throws by Aaron McKie with 4:19 to go.

Hunter then hit a jumper off a scramble and Daniels answered with a foul-line jumper to knot it 93-93 with 3:15 left.

Detroit failed to score on its next three possessions and Vancouver on its next two. Abdur-Rahim broke the drought at 1:26 with a jumper as the shot clock expired.

"I don't know what's going on," Hill said. "We have to make changes in the way we're playing. I'm not knocking anybody, but we're just not getting the job done. I don't think they beat us, we didn't get the job done. I can't say they're a better team than we are, but tonight they were."
