GAME RECAP

Vin Baker scored all 21 of his points in the first half and Hersey Hawkins added 13 of his 16 in the third quarter as the Seattle SuperSonics won their seventh straight game with a 103-81 trouncing of the Orlando Magic.

Baker, who grabbed nine rebounds, scored nine points in a 17-4 run in the opening quarter as Seattle took the lead for good. He had 13 points in the first period, helping the Sonics to a 23-14 lead.

Seattle, which has won eight straight home games, owned a 49-40 lead early in the third quarter before reeling off a 7-0 spurt. Gary Payton, who had 11 points and nine assists, had four points and Hawkins drained one of his four three-pointers on the run, building a 56-40 cushion. Hawkins, who added seven boards and five steals, sank three three-pointers in the period as Seattle took a 78-57 lead.

"You have to give up something when you double team, and they gave up the perimeter shot," Hawkins said. "It was all established by the way Vin (Baker) played in the first half."

"I felt like they were going to double team me more aggressively in the second half," Baker said. "Moving the ball was what I had to do, not beat the double teams. Move the ball and get everyone else the open shot."

Derek Strong scored 15 points and Penny Hardaway and Brian Evans added 13 apiece for the Magic, who made just 2-of-17 from three-point range and dropped their fourth straight game at Seattle. Orlando, which opened a six-game road trip, lost for the second time in three contests following a six-game winning streak.

Orlando's Danny Schayes opened the second quarter with a bucket, but the Sonics scored 15 of the next 17 points. Baker sparked the burst with a 19-foot jumper before Dale Ellis hit two three-pointers and scored eight of his 13 points on the run. A three-point play by Aaron Williams increased the lead to 38-18 with 7:51 left in the period.

"They came out more aggressive than we did and knocked down more shots," Hardaway said. "We had a couple of opportunities to get back into the game, but we failed to capitalize."

Strong had 12 points in the first half, but the Magic still trailed, 49-36.

Magic center Rony Seikaly hit just 3-of-17 shots in his last two games and missed all four of his attempts in the first half. He broke out of the slump by hitting the first two baskets of the third quarter, but Seattle answered with its 7-0 run. Seikaly finished with eight points on 4-of-9 shooting.

"In the second half we got back into it with some doubles, but they made threes off the doubles because we weren't rotating all the way back out," Magic coach Chuck Daly said.

The Sonics grabbed their biggest lead with 5:23 to play on a dunk by Williams, who chipped in nine points and six boards off the bench.

Payton connected on just 3-of-12 from the floor but Seattle still shot 49 percent (38-of-77). Detlef Schrempf had nine points, six rebounds and five assists for the Sonics, who held a 43-32 edge on the glass and forced 15 turnovers.

"I don't think we need to improve on anything right now," Payton said. "I just think we need to keep up the intensity."

"The big thing for us is that our defense is pretty consistent," Sonics coach George Karl said. "We're feeling more comfortable and we're finally rebounding well."

During its seven-game winning streak, Seattle has beaten four of its opponents by 20 points or more.

"We just have everything clicking right now," Baker added.

Orlando shot 42.5 percent (34-of-80) from the field in watching its four-game road winning streak come to an end. The Magic lost to the Sonics for the third straight time and fell to 5-14 in the all-time series.
