GAME RECAP

Elden Campbell scored a season-high 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Denver Nuggets for the fifth straight time, 107-89, in a meeting of the best and worst teams in the Western Conference.

Nick Van Exel shot 5-of-5 from three-point range and scored 19 points for Los Angeles, which has won two in a row and leads the Pacific Division with a 14-2 mark. Lakers superstar center Shaquille O'Neal missed his sixth straight game with an abdominal strain.

"I get paid to play basketball," Campbell said. "Whether it's starting or coming off the bench, I have a job to do. It's fun to get the ball more, but it's more fun winning games. Without Shaq, we play pretty much the same game, maybe a little more offense on the perimeter."

"Van Exel was unbelievable in the second half, he's having a great year," said Denver coach Bill Hanzlik. "We made some tired type mistakes in the fourth quarter. The defense didn't react to situations."

Van Exel is shooting 62.5 percent (25-for-40) from three-point range in his last five contests against Denver.

"I wish all my home games were here," Van Exel said. "I feel good shooting the ball here, but I can't breathe. I don't have a clue why, but I like it. All players know which gyms they like, this is definitley a shooting gym. I also like Dallas and Phoenix."

Johnny Newman scored 19 points and rookie Danny Fortson added 16 for the Nuggets (1-14), who are off to the worst start in franchise history. Newman has led Denver in scoring in each of the last three games. Bobby Jackson recorded 15 points and nine assists for Denver, which shot just 21 percent (3-for-14) from three-point range.

"The first three quarters looked pretty good with our offense and passing the ball, but once we got away from what coach wants us to do we might as well put down an `L'," Fortson said. "It's got to get better soon. We're maturing fast and (are) given a lot of responsibilty."

Derek Fisher, who had 11 points off the bench, made a driving layup to give the Lakers the lead for good, 22-21, with 1:50 left in the first period. Eddie Jones, who scored 16 points, capped a 6-0 spurt with a dunk to give Los Angeles a 44-32 advantage with 6:31 left in the second quarter. Jones had nine points in the second and the Lakers held a 53-46 halftime lead.

The Lakers led by as many as 11 points in the third and had a 77-70 advantage at the end of the period. Newman opened the final period with a 19-footer to pull the Nuggets within 77-72, but Rick Fox answered with a 13-footer with 9:53 to go. Fortson's layup again pulled Denver within five points, but Sean Rooks made one free throw with 9:11 left and Jones sank a pair 32 seconds later.

Jon Barry hit an 18-footer to cap a 16-6 run and give the Lakers their biggest lead of the game, 104-84, with 2:07 to go.
