GAME RECAP

Grant Hill recorded his second triple-double of the season and Malik Sealy sank five free throws in the final 26 seconds as the Detroit Pistons pulled out a 108-103 triple-overtime victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Hill finished with 27 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists for his 26th career triple-double for Detroit, which won for just the second time in five games. The only other triple-double in the league this season was by Houston's Charles Barkley against Denver on Tuesday.

"We were tired and it wasn't pretty, but we got the win," Hill concluded.

The game was tied, 97-97, when Hill scored the first four points of the third overtime to put Detroit ahead for good. The Suns pulled within 104-103 on two free throws by Steve Nash with 21 seconds left, but Sealy hit 4-of-4 from the line down the stretch to secure the victory.

"It wouldn't have been the end of our season to lose this one, but it would have been a major blow," Sealy said. "Now we can use this as a stepping stone."

Brian Williams had 21 points and a season-high 17 rebounds while Lindsey Hunter celebrated his 27th birthday with 20 points and a career-high 11 boards for the Pistons, who improved to 2-1 in overtime games this season. This tied the team's longest game ever and was its first triple-overtime contest since a 186-184 win over Denver on December 13th, 1983.

"We said we would put November behind us. We wanted to get off to a better start in December and we got a win against a quality team," Pistons coach Doug Collins said.

Rex Chapman scored 27 points and Jason Kidd added 21 and 10 assists as the Suns played their eighth overtime period in nine games. Phoenix, which lost for just the second time in its last six contests, earned a 140-139 quadruple-overtime victory over Portland on November 14th.

"We had the opportunity to win many times, we just didn't get it done," Chapman said. "They're the team that was hungry out there. It just didn't bounce our way tonight."

Chapman's three-pointer with 1:30 left in regulation knotted the score, 83-83, before Hill hit a free throw and Williams drove for a dunk with 27 seconds remaining. Chapman answered with a wild, off-balance shot in the lane but Joe Dumars, who scored 10 points, sank 1-of-2 from the line to increase Detriot's lead to 87-85 with 20 seconds to go.

George McCloud made a nice pass to Danny Manning for an easy layup to tie the game 10 seconds later, and Hill missed a driving attempt and a tip-in to send the game to overtime.

With Kevin Johnson sidelined by a knee injury, McCloud started and played 50 minutes, finishing with 15 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and six steals.

McCloud's jumper gave Phoenix a 91-89 edge but Williams came through with a game-tying, turnaround jumper with 7.5 seconds left. Manning scored 16 points but missed an open 10-foot jumper as time expired, forcing double-overtime.

"We had some chances to win and we had some good looks at the basket, but we couldn't get the shots to fall," Suns coach Danny Ainge said. "They just outlasted us."

Hunter's jumper with 1:05 left in the second extra session made it 97-97. The Suns committed turnovers on their next two possessions but still had a shot to win it when Manning stole an inbounds pass. With two seconds left, Antonio McDyess heaved a shot from behind halfcourt that fell well short.

After Hill gave Detroit a 101-97 lead in the third overtime, Hunter sank a pair of free throws with 2:30 remaining. Manning answered with a jumper and Hot Rod Williams hit a fast-break layup with 50 seconds left to cut the deficit to 103-101.

But Sealy, who scored 13 points, hit 1-of-2 from the line with 25.5 seconds to go before Nash's free throws. In the final 18.8 seconds, Sealy hit two pairs of free throws and Nash missed two shot attempts as Detroit snapped a two-game skid against the Suns.

Phoenix, which shot just 35 percent (39-of-111) from the field, finished a 2-2 road trip and dropped to 4-2 away from home overall.

Detroit connected on 41.5 percent (39-of-94) and held a 63-51 rebounding edge.

"This is a team (Phoenix) that really shoots the ball well and we held them to 35-percent shooting," Collins said. "It was a great defensive effort. We did a good job on the boards and we made big shots when we had to."
