GAME RECAP

Reggie Miller scored 27 points, including two jumpers over Kevin Garnett down the stretch, and the Indiana Pacers held the Minnesota Timberwolves scoreless for the final two minutes of a 94-90 victory, their seventh in eight games.

Miller scored 10 points in the third quarter, when the Pacers erased an 11-point deficit. He was held scoreless for the next 9 1/2 minutes until making a pair of 19-footers over the 6-11 Garnett, who is second among forwards in blocked shots.

"The reason we won the game, of course, is that Reggie got hot," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "At the 11-point deficit he got us tied and we went ahead. It lifted us up. ... If it wasn't for Reggie Miller, we'd be walking out of here with a loss."

"We let Reggie get loose on a ccouple of threes and got his confidence going and put them back in the game," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said.

Garnett scored 25 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter. His three-point play with two minutes to go pulled Minnesota within 91-90. But the Timberwolves did not score again as they lost for the sixth time in seven games.

Garnett's two free throws gave the Wolves an 87-87 tie with 4:22 remaining, but a 15-footer by Rik Smits gave the Pacers the lead for good with 3:04 to go. Miller's first jumper over Garnett came with 2:23 left and extended the lead to four points.

Garnett followed with a three-point play, but Minnesota did not score again. Miller missed a three-pointer, but Stanley Roberts was called for offensive goaltending with 41 seconds to play.

"I actually thought the ball was going to be in the basket without him touching it," Saunders said. "I didn't have a real good angle on it."

Miller made another jumper over Garnett with 22 seconds to go and Minnesota's Tom Gugliotta lost the ball out of bounds on the next possession. Mark Jackson's free throw with five seconds left sealed Indiana's 13th win in 17 all-time series meetings.

"I missed a lot of shots early in the first quarter, wide-open threes, and it was making me mad," said Miller, who shot 11-of-21 from the field. "I just wanted to set the tone that we were going to win this game, and I think the rest of the guys jumped on the bandwagon after that."

Smits scored 15 points and Jackson added 12 and 11 assists for the Pacers, who shot 44 percent (36-of-82) from the field and committed just nine turnovers. Travis Best scored 10 points off the bench.

Chris Carr scored 19 points and Gugliotta and Sam Mitchell added 11 apiece for the Wolves, who shot 43 percent (34-of-79) and held a 44-32 rebounding advantage but committed 16 turnovers that led to 28 Indiana points. Gugliotta pulled down 12 boards and Garnett grabbed 10.

"You have to be in situations like this," Mitchell said. "It's growing pains. We played mentally tough, we even beat them on the boards. It's experience -- being in that situation enough times to where you know what to do. We have two guys on our team who are supposed to be juniors in college (Garnett and Stephon Marbury)."

Carr scored 17 points in the first half as Minnesota grabbed a 56-47 lead. A lay-in by Roberts extended the advantage to 60-49 with 10:15 left in the third quarter before Miller scored eight points in a 22-4 burst. A three-pointer by Jackson gave Indiana a 71-64 bulge with 3:22 to go in the period.

"I knew I had to do a little more offensively, taking Carr to the hole, because he kind of got off on me in the first half and I wasn't putting any pressure on him," Miller said. "The guys said, 'You've got to go after him.'"

"You have to have a killer instinct," said Saunders, whose team has lost five of its last six home games. "When you get a team down by nine, you have to come out in the second half and establish again what you established in the beginning of the game. We didn't do that."

Two free throws by Gugliotta capped an 8-0 spurt and gave the Wolves a 72-71 lead before Jackson's two foul shots closed the third quarter and gave the Pacers a one-point edge.
