GAME RECAP

Vin Baker scored 23 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 27 seconds left, as the Seattle SuperSonics bounced back with a 93-89 victory over the New Jersey Nets, their eighth win in the last nine games.

Hersey Hawkins added four clutch free throws for Seattle, which outscored New Jersey 8-2 in the final minute and improved to 6-2 on the road. The SuperSonics had a seven-game winning streak snapped Tuesday in Washington.

"I enjoyed my team tonight," Seattle coach George Karl said. "They showed a lot of guts and played a feisty game. It makes tomorrow's day off enjoyable and makes the road trip positive. A win on the road is like sex. There's not a bad moment."

Sam Cassell scored 23 points and Jayson Williams pulled down 24 rebounds for the Nets, who were returning from a 3-2 road trip but lost to the Sonics for the sixth time in nine meetings. New Jersey wasted a 60-35 rebounding advantage.

"That was a bad loss, a bad loss," Nets coach John Calipari said. "With 1:25 left, it's anybody's ballgame. When there's a breakdown in execution, it can cost you the game. It's a bad loss."

A layup by former Sonic Kendall Gill, who scored 18 points, gave the Nets an 87-85 lead with 1:01 to play. But Detlef Schrempf answered with a tying jumper 10 seconds later.

New Jersey's Kerry Kittles missed and Baker rebounded. He was fouled by Chris Gatling and made both free throws to give the Sonics an 89-87 lead with 27 seconds remaining. David Benoit and Gill missed jumpers and Sam Cassell missed a three-pointer on the next possession, and Hawkins made two free throws with 8.2 seconds to go. Gill had a dunk but Hawkins made two more from the line to seal it with 3.2 seconds remaining.

"This was a tough game," Baker said. "But it shows our poise. We have not been coming together as a team lately. It is going to be another month or two before we really jell."

"I thought we had them, a game we should have stolen," Williams said. "We had shots down the stretch. We just couldn't hit them. This hurts. If we win this game, it would answer the question if we are able to beat the good teams."

Schrempf had 17 points and nine rebounds and Gary Payton and Dale Ellis added 16 points apiece for Seattle, which shot 42 percent (31-of-74) from the field but sank 24-of-29 free throws and committed just nine turnovers.

"This is just a veteran team that's been around," Payton said. "We don't panic. We take the same shots in the beginning and in the end. It was a just a terrible rebounding performance. You have to compensate somehow. Tonight we played defense and got easy baskets."

Kittles scored 17 points and Gatling grabbed 11 rebounds for New Jersey, which shot 41 percent (37-of-91) and had 16 turnovers.

"Cal told me I had to get a lot of boards to win the game," said Williams. "I was just real active today. If we won tonight, the rebounds would have felt good. Now, forget about it."

Baker scored 17 points in the first half as Seattle grabbed a 51-48 lead. Cassell scored 14 and Gill 10 to keep New Jersey close.

"We played well in the first half offensively, but not again until the final four minutes," Karl said. "We did a lot of things defensively that saved us tonight."

A drive by Schrempf gave the Sonics a 57-52 lead, but Kittles scored four points in a 10-0 spurt, including a layup that gave the Nets a 62-57 advantage with 4:30 left in the third quarter. A three-pointer by Sam Perkins 21 seconds later ended a 5:19 scoreless drought by the Sonics.

Seattle forged a 66-66 tie entering the fourth quarter and used a 9-0 burst early in the period to open a 76-69 lead with 6:27 to play. But New Jersey scored 10 of the next 12 points, including six by Cassell, whose drive provided a 79-78 edge with 4:14 left.
