GAME RECAP

Derek Strong scored 23 points, including a key tip-in with 5.4 seconds remaining, and Penny Hardaway chipped in with 22 points leading the Orlando Magic to a 101-97 win over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Strong, who scored 15 of his points in the second half, also grabbed 13 boards, as the Magic won for the ninth time in 11 games overall and for the sixth time in seven road games. Danny Schayes also contributed 13 points off the bench and Mark Price added 11 points and 13 assists.

Vancouver, which had its four-game home winning streak snapped, was led by Shareef Abdul-Rahim's 24 points and nine rebounds and Otis Thorpe's 19 and 13.

"It was a disppointing loss, because it was one we gave away. We're not good enough yet to be giving games away to our opponents," said Vancouver coach Brian Hill, who declined comment on his reaction to facing the Magic for the first time since being fired as their coach last season. "It's unfortunate because for three quarters we played respectable basketball, but in the third quarter we were we as bad as I've ever seen us at the offensive end."

With Orlando clinging to a 97-95 lead, Hardaway hit a baseline jumper with 1:23 remaining to put Orlando back up by four.

George Lynch (16 points) and Thorpe both missed shots from in close on Vancouver's next possession, but Orlando was unable to score at the other end. Thorpe was then fouled and hit both shots from the line to pull the Grizzlies within 99-97 with 31.2 seconds left.

Orlando ran the clock down on its next possession and Rony Seikaly drove the lane, but his shot hit off the rim. Strong was there for the rebound, tipping in the follow with 5.4 seconds left to make it 101-97.

"It (tip-in) was a big play. We were trying to get Rony on the post, but they were playing tough defense. So we pushed them all out," said Strong. "As soon as I saw him run through the lane I went down for the rebound or tip-in. George Lynch was guarding me and knocked me off balance so all I could do was tip it in. I was very happy it went down."

The only shot the Grizzlies were able to get off over the final five seconds was a desperation three-pointer by Antonio Daniels at the buzzer.

"This is it in a nutshell. We played selfish basketball in the third quarter," said Edwards. "When you play that way you get away from what you want to do offensively, and then guys don't apply themselves on the offensive end. Don't give Orlando credit for that third quarter. It was us playing selfish basketball."

Led by Abdur-Rahim, who had 18 points in the first half, the Grizzlies took a 59-52 lead at intermission.

The Magic started off the third quarter on a 14-4 run, with Schyaes contributing six of those points. His jumper with 6:28 reamining in the third quarter gave Orlando a 66-63 advanatge.

Orlando also finished up the quarter, during which it outscored Vancouver 29-15, on a 15-6 spurt. Hardaway and Price contributed four points apiece as the Magic opened up an 81-74 lead entering the fourth quarter.

"With Abdur-Rahim having a good first half we knew we had to double the ball and make someone else beat us," said Hardaway. "Coming out in the third quarter we had to pick it up and take the ball to the hoop stronger and get to the free throw line. Both of those things were very crucial and really helped us out in the second half."

Vancouver center Bryant Reeves played only 14 minutes, with four points and seven rebounds, after spending Tuesday night witnessing the birth of his first child, a son.
