GAME RECAP

Chris Webber had 26 points and 14 rebounds as the Washington Wizards defeated the Sacramento Kings for the sixth straight time, 118-96, posting their second-best offensive output of the season one game after their best defensive effort.

Juwan Howard added 22 points and seven assists and Rod Strickland chipped in 16 and 10 as Washington improved to 2-0 at the new MCI Center after opening the season with five straight home losses at US Airways Arena.

The Wizards christened their new home with a 95-78 victory over Seattle on Tuesday, notching a season low for points allowed. Their season high came in a 120-96 win at Denver on November 4th.

"The big thing was being able to win games at home," Wizards coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "We need to have some continuity at home."

Mitch Richmond had 26 points and seven assists for the Kings, who suffered their fifth straight defeat and sixth in a row on the road.

"We play well in spurts, but we can't put anything together for a whole game," Richmond said. "I think we try to play hard, but tonight was not an indication of that. The effort just wasn't there."

Tracy Murray had 16 points and a season-high 10 boards off the bench for Washington, which outrebounded Sacramento, 55-30.

"There is a huge difference in playing in this new building," Murray said. "There's a very positive atmosphere, it's a great building."

The Wizards led 35-29 early in the second quarter when they reeled off a 14-4 run to open a double-digit lead for good. Murray scored five points in the spurt and Webber's dunk with 6:01 left before halftime built the lead to 49-33.

"You've got to jump on a team like that early because with a guy like Mitch Richmond, if he gets started, then you're going to have problems," Murray said.

Olden Polynice scored 12 points and his basket to open the third quarter pulled the Kings within 65-50. But Sacramento got no closer as Webber took over in the third quarter.

Leading 73-53, Washington virtually put the game out of reach with a 12-2 run, keyed by six points from Webber. Strickland drove the length of the court for a layup to cap the spurt, giving the Wizards and 85-55 cushion with 5:19 remaining.

Webber scored 14 points in the period, helping Washington grab a 93-67 cushion.

"They never let us get back in the game," Kings forward Corliss Williamson said. "We tried to get some momentum, and every time we did, they hit a big shot."

The Wizards shot 53 percent (49-of-93) from the field and beat Sacramento at home for the fourth straight time.

Lawrence Funderburke scored 16 points off the bench for the Kings, who hit 42 percent (33-of-78) from the floor. Sacramento fell to 1-8 on the road and 0-8 when allowing 100 points or more.

Williamson had just seven points and three rebounds and fellow starting forward Billy Owens, who was averaging 15.0 points and 10.5 rebounds over the last four games, finished with just six and four.
