GAME RECAP

Rookie Maurice Taylor scored a career-high 17 points and made a pivotal play in overtime as the Los Angeles Clippers beat the San Antonio Spurs for the sixth straight time, 100-96.

Eric Piatkowski had a career-best 24 points and Lorenzen Wright added a season-high 17 and nine rebounds for the Clippers, who won for just the second time in their last 13 games.

Darrick Martin's three-pointer with 2:14 left in overtime gave Los Angeles a 94-93 edge and sparked a 7-0 spurt. Taylor blocked Sean Elliott's shot and converted on the other end, draining a key 12-foot jumper with 1:20 to play.

"We beat a quality team and you can't beat that," Taylor said. "We earned this one. We finally put everything together and got a win and it feels good."

"It was sweet, we made plays down the stretch," Martin added. "We played like an NBA team tonight. You could tell everybody was out there to win."

David Robinson, who had 25 points and 12 rebounds, turned the ball over on the Spurs' next possession and missed two free throws with 26.5 seconds to go. Piatkowski grabbed the rebound and James Robinson sank two free throws six seconds later. Lamond Murray hit a fast-break dunk with five seconds left to seal the win.

Piatkowski, who scored a team-high 20 points in a 94-91 loss to Utah on Saturday, started and played 44 minutes in place of Brent Barry, who missed his second straight game with a contusion of his lower left leg.

"I'm having a blast out there. Two games where I get 40 points I couldn't have even dreamed of last week," Piatkowski said. "It was different tonight because it seemed the last few games, if it was close, the offense got stagnant."

Taylor's slam pulled the Clippers within 84-83 with 52 seconds left in regulation, but Robinson answered with a driving layup.

Wright sank a pair of free throws before Elliott, who scored 14 points, missed two from the stripe with 10.1 seconds to go. The Clippers grabbed the rebound and called timeout with 8.2 remaining.

Murray threw the inbounds pass to Wright on the left wing and he gave it right back to Murray, who drove past David Robinson and Tim Duncan for the go-ahead lay-in with 5.4 seconds left.

Wright fouled Robinson less than two seconds later and he hit the first free throw, but the second barely touched the front of the rim. James Robinson was unable to get his shot off before the buzzer sounded, sending the game to overtime.

"A lot of nights we're like a deer caught in headlights, but tonight there was fire in their eyes," Clippers coach Bill Fitch said. "And I knew these guys were not going to let it slip away. It is a big win against a good basketball team."

Taylor, Martin and Murray led a huge effort from the Clippers' bench, which outscored the Spurs' reserves, 51-10. Martin scored 13 points and Murray added 12 and seven boards.

"It was a total collective effort, everybody was into it," Murray said. "Everybody played a productive role down to the end."

Avery Johnson had 17 points and seven assists and Duncan added 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Spurs, who have lost four of their last five games on the road.

"The most disappointing thing is the lack of communication on defense," David Robinson said. "We didn't play well the whole game. It's even tougher, because we didn't make our free throws. All of our problems have not been solved yet."

Vinny Del Negro, whose jumper had given San Antonio a 93-91 lead, chipped in 14 points but the Spurs were outscored, 31-20, in the fourth quarter and overtime.

"Before we knew it, we were suddenly in an overtime game and going home with a loss," Del Negro concluded.
