GAME RECAP

Rik Smits scored 24 points and Reggie Miller added 19 as the Indiana Pacers extended their winning streak to five games with a 96-85 victory over the lowly Denver Nuggets.

Indiana has won five straight games for the first time since November 28th-December 4th, 1996 and also has won its last four contests in Denver.

"It's definitely not a game that we will put on our highlight reel," Miller said. "Forty eight points in the first half is too many for us to give up. We gave up 18 in the third quarter and got the momentum in the rest of the game."

Bobby Jackson scored 22 points and rookie Eric Washington added 13 for the Nuggets, who fell to 1-15 to extend the worst start in franchise history. The Nuggets outrebounded the Pacers, 51-37, but shot just 37 percent (30-for-81) from the field.

"I thought in the first half we pushed the ball hard, but in the second half we just didn't get any of those easy buckets," said Denver coach Bill Hanzlik. "We controlled the boards and we had a good effort, we just couldn't get the ball to go in the hole. They're very tough to go in the low post on because they're so big and strong. Our effort and competitiveness was good enough to win."

Denver trailed the entire fourth period, but pulled within 85-81 on Washington's basket with three minutes remaining. Smits made a jumper to give the Pacers a six-point cushion with 2:05 to go before Jackson answered with a spinning layup 15 seconds later to again pull the Nuggets within four.

Mark Jackson converted a three-point play with 1:36 left to give Indiana a 90-83 advantage. Jackson and Antonio Davis combined to make 6-of-8 free throws the rest of the way to seal the victory. Jackson had 12 points and 10 assists.

Bobby Jackson's layup off a fast break gave the Nuggets their biggest lead of the game, 39-31, with 5:33 left in the first half. Miller made a free throw with 2:26 to go to pull the Pacers within 43-41. Jackson sank a 31-footer at the buzzer and the Nuggets took a 48-43 lead into halftime.

Denver could not build more than a six-point lead in the third. Indiana tied the game when former Nugget Jalen Rose hit a layup to make it 57-57 with 5:09 to go in the stanza. Dean Garrett, who had 12 points and 10 rebounds, dunked to give the Nuggets their last lead 57-56 with 4:49 left.

"We didn't play that well in the first half on the defensive end," said Indiana coach Larry Bird. "In the second half, Chris Mullin wasn't getting it done. I put Jalen in there and thank goodness he came through. We're strating to make plays."

Jackson finished a fast break with a layup to tie it and Rose nailed a three-pointer to give the Pacers the lead for good, 62-59, with 3:23 remaining in the third.

Denver shot 38 percent (6-for-16) in the third and just 23 percent (5-for-22) in the final quarter.
