GAME RECAP

Mark Strickland scored 14 of his career-high 20 points in the fourth quarter and Tim Hardaway added 18 points and 10 assists to lead the Miami Heat to their seventh straight win over the Boston Celtics, 117-97.

Jamal Mashburn had 18 points and nine rebounds and P.J. Brown added 11 and 12 for Miami, which has won five of its last six games. The Heat improved to 9-2 at home and 6-1 against Atlantic Division foes.

"We tried to stay the course, stay in the game and beat their pressure," said Heat coach Pat Riley. "They move and give you opportunities. I thought we got a lot of easy looks at the basket. They want you to take a lot of tough shots, but we were able to finish a lot of plays tonight."

Antoine Walker totaled 26 points and 12 rebounds for Boston, which has dropped five games in a row and three straight on the road. The Celtics, who won 26 of the first 34 meetings in the series, have not defeated Miami since February 3rd, 1996.

Mashburn tallied 10 points in the first quarter as Miami opened a 29-24 lead. The margin was 43-36 midway through the second period before Hardaway, Voshon Lenard and Isaac Austin combined on a 14-0 run that widened the gap to 57-36 with 54 seconds to go in the half.

"The ball was spread around very well tonight," said Hardaway. "Everybody was looking for everybody else. We did what we had to do, we put this team away. We didn't let them get any confidence."

It was 59-41 at the intermission and the Heat maintained their big lead throughout the third quarter. Strickland's layup late in the period gave Miami its biggest lead at 91-67 and the margin was 22 points heading into the fourth quarter.

The Celtics got to within 15 points on two occasions in the fourth, the first on a three-pointer by Bruce Bowen that made it 100-85 with 4:29 to play.

"They are a very good man-to-man defensive team, they make you rush shots," said Boston coach Rick Pitino. "We had 98 possessions, but we shot only 35 percent, so it didn't pay off. We're talented, but we're not physically strong. We don't guard well enough man-to-man. As we improve our talent pool, we'll get better and better. The Heat executed extremely well, that's something we are shooting for."

Austin contributed 16 points and a career-best four blocked shots and Lenard netted 11 points for Miami, which made 28-of-34 free throw attempts (82 percent).

"We were just taking advantage of the opportunities that they gave us," said Strickland. "The fastbreak game let me showcase my talents. Everybody was looking for me."

Walter McCarty and rookie Chauncey Billups each scored 17 points and Travis Knight had 13 and seven boards for Boston, which shot just 36 percent (35-of-98) from the floor and had no blocks.

"They're (Heat) tough for any team," said McCarty. "A lot of times we didn't go to the right spot. We weren't able to wear them out with our press. We got some good shots, but they didn't fall. That's why the press didn't work."
