GAME RECAP

Jayson Williams scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Kendall Gill had 24 points as the New Jersey Nets recorded a season-high 61 first-half points to trample the Philadelphia 76ers, 107-88.

Rookie forward Keith Van Horn made a mediocre debut for the Nets, scoring 11 points in 26 minutes. The second overall pick in the draft, Van Horn had been sidelined with a preseason injury. He shot just 4-of-10 from the field, committed seven turnovers and picked up five fouls. The 6-10 Van Horn, who was selected by Philadelphia but traded to New Jersey, scored six points in the first quarter to help the Nets to a 40-16 lead.

I realized I wouldn't be at the top of my game," Van Horn said. "It takes a lot of time when you're out six weeks. Especially the first time you're out."

"We had Keith with us, the intensity was high and it was a good win," said Williams. "We knew he was out a while and that his conditioning wasn't going to be that good, but our team defense helped the golden child (Van Horn) and it was contagious."

Gill had eight points during an early 20-2 run that put the Nets ahead to stay. Kerry Kittles, who had 11 of his 17 points in the first quarter, scored five during the burst, which was capped by Williams' putback with 4:02 left that gave New Jersey a 29-8 edge.

The Nets hit 64 percent (16-of-25) of their shots in the first quarter to post a season-high scoring total for one period. They led at halftime, 61-40.

"My overall reaction in the first six minutes was that I was sick," said Philadelphia coach Larry Brown. "I was shocked they only scored 40 in the first quarter."

Terry Cummings and rookie Tim Thomas scored 16 points apiece for the 76ers, who have dropped three straight games and five of six. Thomas, a Nets' draft pick who was acquired in the Van Horn trade, scored 10 of his season-high total in the second half.

New Jersey led 12-7 before Van Horn drove to the hoop to ignite a 10-0 run with 7:37 to go in the first quarter. Jerry Stackhouse sank a free throw with 5:10 to go, ending the 76ers' 2 1/2-minute scoreless drought, but the Nets outscored Philadelphia, 18-8, to end the period.

We gave up 40 points in the first quarter," said a dejected Stackhouse. "If you give up a 40-point quarter, you're not doing your job."

Sam Cassell had seven points and 12 assists and Chris Gatling chipped in with 11 points off the bench for the Nets, who tied a season high by shooting 51 percent (40-of-79) from the field. Gill led New Jersey at the free throw line, going 6-for-6 as the Nets shot a season-high 92 percent (22-of-24) from the stripe.

New Jersey posted its highest margin of victory since a 21-point win over Washington on February 15th.

Cummings added 11 rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench and reserve Jim Jackson had 14 points for the 76ers, who were held to 1-of-8 from three-point range and 44 percent (33-of-75) overall. Philadelphia guard Allen Iverson, who was limited to five points and one assist, played just eight minutes in the second half.

The Nets opened up their biggest lead in the second quarter when Van Horn sank a pair from the line to build a 26-point bulge, 52-26.

Philadelphia got as close as 90-77 on a layup by Cummings midway through the final quarter, but New Jersey answered with a 13-6 run to build a 20-point advantage.
