GAME RECAP

Horace Grant, who came off the injured list earlier in the day, scored a season-high 25 points as the injury-depleted Orlando Magic slipped past the Los Angeles Clippers, 83-79, rebounding from an embarrassing loss to the Golden State Warriors.

Gerald Wilkins added 21 points for the Magic, which held the Clippers scoreless for 8 1/2 minutes during the fourth quarter. Four straight points by Eric Piatkowski and a dunk by Lamond Murray with 1.4 seconds to go pulled Los Angeles within 81-79, but Darrell Armstrong sank two free throws to seal the victory.

"It's nice to come back to a win," Grant said. It's just one of those things, you come out and play together. You play aggressive on the defensive end and you win the close ones."

"He's (Grant) old. He's gonna go to the back of the plane tonight and lay down. He's gonna be hurtin' tomorrow," Armstrong joked.

Grant, who scored 13 points in the third quarter and grabbed nine rebounds, had missed the last six games with a strained left calf. Replacing Grant on the injured list was Derek Strong, who has a sprained left knee. Strong has led the team in scoring five times and has averaged 11.8 points and 6.8 rebounds in 18 games.

The Magic were also without their top two scorers -- All-Star guard Penny Hardaway and center Rony Seikaly. Hardaway, who sat out Friday's 104-89 loss to the Latrell Sprewell-less Warriors, missed his seventh game of the season due to tendinitis in his left knee. Seikaly was a late scratch with a strained left foot.

"With Penny and Rony out of the game, I wasn't really looking for my shot, but I was getting great opportunities to shoot the ball," Grant said. "When two of your best players go down, other guys have to step up and everybody did it tonight."

Piatkowski scored 15 points and Murray added 14 and nine rebounds off the bench for the Clippers (3-15), who just missed winning back-to-back games for the first time this season.

"I thought for a minute we could do it, and then we fell apart," Piatkowski said. "It hurts a lot, but we're not gonna get down about it."

Murray made a pair of foul shots to give Los Angeles a 71-68 lead with 9:02 to play. But the Clippers did not score again until there were 23 seconds remaining, missing eight straight shots and commiting five of their season-high 18 turnovers.

"We had our defensive team out scrambling out there in the fourth quarter," Armstrong said. "I kept looking at the scoreboard and thought we were both holding each other for about 8 1/2 minutes. But we started getting a couple of more buckets and holding them a little more."

"Once we made a turnover, it just kept going," Murray said. "We can't make those mistakes. You saw how close we came. Without those turnovers, we can win that game."

Danny Schayes, who started for Seikaly, hit a tip-in and Derek Harper made two free throws, sparking an 11-0 run and giving Orlando the lead for good. Nick Anderson had a layup, Grant drained a jumper, Armstrong dunked on the break and Harper made 1-of-2 from the line, building the lead to 79-71 with 4:17 to play.

"With the game Horace had tonight, it makes you wonder if Horace is really hurt," Harper joked. "We needed his offense tonight because Seikaly and Strong were out with Penny. Anytime you can have a guy step up for you like Horace it's a big lift."

The teams went scoreless for nearly four minutes until Murray finally ended the drought with a jumper. But Armstrong answered with two crucial free throws. Piatkowski drained a jumper and stole the ensuing inbounds pass, after which he was fouled and hit two free throws with 11.5 seconds to play, cutting the deficit to 81-77.

Wilkins had a chance to put away the game with two free throws with 10 seconds left but he missed both. On an inbounds play at the other end, Piatkowski found Murray for an alley-oop dunk but Armstrong ended the comeback by hitting a pair of foul shots with nine-tenths of a second to play.

Armstrong scored nine points and Schayes added eight and a season-high 11 boards for the Magic, who finished their road trip at 3-2 and have won 10 of their last 13 games overall. Mark Price chipped in nine points, nine assists and seven rebounds as Orlando improved to 6-1 without Hardaway this season.

Rookie Maurice Taylor scored 12 points and Rodney Rogers added 10 and seven rebounds as Los Angeles suffered its sixth straight home loss against the Magic.

Clippers leading scorer Brent Barry missed his third straight game due to a contusion of his lower left leg.
