GAME RECAP

Charles Barkley had 19 points, 17 rebounds and six assists and the Houston Rockets withstood a furious rally in the final 20 seconds to defeat the Dallas Mavericks, 108-106, in front of 20,635 fans at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City.

The first regular-season NBA game played in Mexico drew a sellout pro-Rockets crowd and was the largest ever for a basketball game in that country.

"This was terrific," Barkley said. "That's one good thing about playing in different countries -- you get an opportunity to see other fans, and they were very supportive of our team. They had energy and enthusiasm throughout the game. It was a fun night."

Kevin Willis contributed 17 points and 11 rebounds and Clyde Drexler 17 points for the Rockets, who won their eighth straight game overall and seventh straight over the Mavericks. It is Houston's longest winning streak since last season, when it won nine in a row from November 14th-30th.

"The people here have been very nice to us," Drexler said. "It's a great place to come. I wish we weren't going home right away."

Michael Finley scored a career-high 35 points for Dallas, which dropped to 1-1 under new coach Don Nelson. Erick Strickland added a season-high 19 points and Khalid Reeves and Hubert Davis scored 16 apiece for the Mavericks, who have not won consecutive games since opening the season with three straight wins.

"I was very impressed with the crowd, the noise and the excitement," Nelson said. "I think it really brought the best out in both teams. It was very similar to a playoff-type atmosphere. It was wild, and I'm just surprised they weren't rooting more for us."

With 19 seconds remaining, Drexler hit a pair of free throws to give Houston a 106-98 lead, but the Mavericks made their move, starting with Martin Muursepp's driving layup with 15 seconds to go.

Drexler hit one of two free throws, but Finley countered with a three-pointer off the glass to make it 107-103 with 11 seconds remaining. Six seconds later, Finley was fouled by Drexler on a three-point attempt and went to the line for three free throws. He made all three shots to cut Houston's lead to 107-106.

"I was joking with the guys on their bench," Finley said. "'You better hit your free throws or we're going to be here for a while.' Then Drexler missed one. Someone was dumb enough to give me a three. Hey, you never know in this game."

Mario Elie was fouled on the ensuing inbounds play and made one of two free throws to give Houston a two-point edge with 3.1 seconds left. Dallas inbounded, but a pass for Strickland was broken up by Elie. Barkley retained possession as the buzzer sounded and hurled it into the crowd.

"This was an exciting game," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "I wish it weren't so exciting near the end."

Eddie Johnson scored 15 points for the Rockets, who shot just 41 percent (35-of-86) from the field and had six players in double figures. Houston held a 46-37 rebounding edge.

"We got some great efforst tonight," Tomjanovich said. "Charles was everywhere. he was all over the court. Not just with his shots, but with his rebounding, his passing the ball."

The Mavericks shot 46 percent (37-of-81), including 10-of-27 from three-point range. Finley was 4-of-5 and Davis 3-of-6 behind the arc. Dallas averaged 16.6 three-point attempts per game under Jim Cleamons but has launched 49 in two games under Nelson, hitting 22.

Finley's 11 points gave the Mavericks a 29-26 lead after one quarter, but Barkley led a second-quarter charge that saw the Rockets grab a 54-53 halftime edge. The game was tied 78-78 entering the final period.
