GAME RECAP

John Starks scored 27 points and the New York Knicks shackled Glen Rice for the second time this season and defeated the Charlotte Hornets, 90-79.

Starks had 16 of his points in the second quarter when New York built an eight-point halftime lead. The Knicks increased the advantage to as many as 19 points in the fourth quarter.

Rice, who scored just 11 points on 3-of-13 shooting in the season-opening 97-85 loss to the Knicks on October 31st, again hit only 3-of-13 shots and finished with 15 points. He averaged 28.3 points in three games against the Knicks last year on 51 percent shooting from the field (26-of-51).

"They got me twice, but it won't happen again," said Rice. "The shots just didn't go in."

"Rice struggled a bit, but he'll be okay," said Hornets coach Dave Cowens. "But the others have to step up and make the shots when he gets doubled."

Patrick Ewing had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Chris Mills added 11 points for the Knicks, who snapped a two-game losing streak.

"This was a big game for us," said Ewing. "After two losses in a row, we wanted to make sure this wasn't the third. We came out with a lot more fire for this one than we did in the past two. Hopefully, we can use this game as a stepping stone."

Former Knick Anthony Mason led the Hornets with 16 points and 14 rebounds and Vlade Divac added 14 points.

"We got a lot of work to do," said Mason. "I can go down the line, but people's feelings will be hurt. We helped out the Knicks by taking quick shots. We are not using what we got and that's what hurts the most."

Charlotte hit just 35.4 percent from the field (28-of-79), including just 1-of-11 from three-point range, and finished with a season-low in scoring. The Hornets' reserves converted just 5-of-17 shots.

The Hornets held a 34-30 advantage in the second quarter before Starks ignited a 16-4 run with nine points. Starks' second three-pointer with 3:47 left in the half capped the run and gave New York a 46-38 lead.

Charlie Ward scored 10 of New York's 17 points in the third quarter as the Knicks maintained their eight-point lead. Ward converted all four of his shots in the quarter, including a pair of three-pointers.

After Charlotte scored the first basket of the fourth quarter, the Knicks went on a 15-2 run. Starks scored five points in the run and Ewing capped it with a layup with 6:20 left to give the Knicks their biggest lead at 84-65.

"I think we needed something like this to put the fire in our belly," said Starks. "We played solid in the fourth quarter. We did our job at the end."

The Hornets scored eight straight points to cut New York's lead to 86-75 with just over three minutes left, but pulled no closer than 11 the rest of the way.

Larry Johnson, who was acquired by the Knicks in exchange for Mason in July of 1996, missed his fourth straight game with a sprained right ankle.
