GAME RECAP

Isaiah Rider scored 21 of his 26 points in the second half to lead the Portland Trail Blazers to a 105-99 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, who have lost consecutive games for the first time this season.

Rasheed Wallace added 18 points and nine rebounds and rookie Alvin Williams scored a career-high 16 points for Portland, which has posted consecutive home victories over Utah and the Lakers.

"In this game in particular I just wanted to let it come to me a bit," Rider said. "I felt last game I forced it. We started off slow in the third quarter and I thought we could go faster and I could get some layups or some closer looks. But it wasn't going that way so I said let me take it over right now."

Nick Van Exel had 24 points and 12 assists and Kobe Bryant scored 19 points for the Lakers, who were coming off Sunday's 94-84 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Los Angeles fell to 12-2 against Western Conference foes and lost for the first time in four games against Pacific Division opponents this season.

"We had to scramble to change the tempo of the game and Isaiah Rider made some tough shots," Los Angeles coach Del Harris said. "We aren't playing with the enthusiam, energy and looseness as when we were on our winning streak. We just aren't making shots, we'll play through it though."

The Blazers took control late in the third quarter behind the play of Gary Trent. After replacing Arvydas Sabonis midway through the period, he scored eight points in a 4 1/2 minute span and helped key a 15-3 burst to end the period as Portland took its largest lead at 78-67 on Rider's jumper with 26 seconds remaining in the third.

"Gary Trent gave us a huge energy lift," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "He as much as anybody won the game for us by attacking their press when we were having trouble."

Portland maintained its lead behind Rider, who scored 10 of Portland's first 17 points in the fourth quarter. His jumper with 4:29 remaining gave the Blazers a 95-86 advantage.

The lead was still nine points with 2:24 to play before Van Exel buried a three-pointer and added a layup as the Lakers closed within 97-93 with 58 seconds left. But Rider hit a 20-footer and Williams a free throw around a layup by Eddie Jones to make it 101-95.

The Lakers got within 101-99 with 12.4 seconds to play on Bryant's two free throws, but rookie Rick Brunson made five free throws in the final 19 seconds to help Portland pull out the victory.

Trent finished with 15 points and Brunson 11 for the Blazers, who shot 51 percent (40-of-79) from the field and held a 44-40 rebounding advantage. Portland has beaten Los Angeles four straight times in the regular season.

"We came out flat, we've been doing that lately," Jones said. "If you don't play good defense, teams will go ahead and shoot 50 percent on you."

Elden Campbell collected 17 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots for the Lakers, who shot 41 percent (38-of-92).
