GAME RECAP

Shandon Anderson scored 10 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter as the Utah Jazz celebrated John Stockton's return to the lineup by cooling off the Indiana Pacers, 106-97.

Stockton, the NBA's all-time leader in assists and steals, made his first appearance of the season, scoring 10 points and handing out seven assists. He was expected to miss six to eight weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on October 13th.

"There were improvements every day and I wasn't even sure today that I was going to play tonight," Stockton said. "I know everybody else was sure but I wasn't and we weren't, so I was glad it worked out the way it did. I was obviously anxious to be out there and see where I was and to try to participate and do something good for this team."

Karl Malone scored 31 points and Jeff Hornacek added 13 for the Jazz, who improved to 8-0 when scoring 100 points and won their sixth straight home game. Utah defeated Indiana for the seventh straight time and has not lost to the Pacers at home since December 15th, 1990.

Antonio Davis scored a season-high 19 points for the Pacers, who had their six-game winning streak snapped and surrendered 100 points for the first time this season. Reggie Miller scored 16 before a third-quarter ejection for arguing and Mark Jackson added 14 as Indiana also had its five-game road winning streak stopped.

"We gave up like 58 or 56 the first half and usually the second half we play better defense," Indiana coach Larry Bird said. "We never put teams to the line like this. They went to the line way too many times. They got the benefit of the calls tonight and that makes it tough. You can't defend free throws."

Indiana erased a 10-point third-quarter deficit and trailed 90-89 when Davis made a layup with 7:27 left. But Anderson hit a jumper and a layup to stretch the lead to 94-89 with 6:33 to play.

Malone followed with consecutive jumpers to increase Utah's advantage to 98-89 with 4:49 to go. After Davis, who scored all but three of Indiana's 17 points in the final period, tipped in a miss, Anderson capped the 10-2 spurt with a tip of his own to make it 100-91 with 4:11 remaining.

Stockton made an instant impact, scoring five of Utah's first 11 points. The Jazz opened a 28-26 lead after the first quarter and were ahead at halftime, 57-56.

But Utah started to build a cushion when the Pacers began to lose their cool in the third quarter. Dale Davis was hit with a technical foul with 6:56 left in the period and Miller picked up two and was ejected 24 seconds later for arguing a three-second violation. Utah took a 76-66 lead on a pair of free throws by Greg Foster.

Indiana answered with a 7-0 spurt to close within 76-73 on Antonio Davis' layup with 3:48 left in the third. Utah held an 84-80 lead entering the fourth before Antonio Davis tied it for the final time with a dunk with 8:55 to play.

Greg Ostertag had nine points and nine rebounds and Bryon Russell also scored nine points for Utah, which shot 46 percent from the field and held a 43-32 rebounding advantage.

"The physical nature of this game was probably good for us," Hornacek said. "The last four or five games we haven't played that well, so a little intense game like this is good for us."

Rik Smits scored 14 points and Chris Mullin 12 for the Pacers, who shot 49 percent (35-of-72) but attempted 10 less free throws than the Jazz.
