GAME RECAP

Clyde Drexler had 17 points and a season-high 11 assists in three quarters as the Houston Rockets extended their winning streak to nine games with a 108-78 rout of the struggling San Antonio Spurs.

Kevin Willis added 16 points and Charles Barkley grabbed 14 rebounds for Houston, which matched its longest winning streak since November 14th-30th of last season. Dating to last season, the Rockets have won 13 straight games with Willis in the starting lineup, including a 10-0 mark this season.

"We played a total team game," Drexler said. "It's important for us to stay focused. We're on a great streak right now and we shouldn't have any letups."

David Robinson scored 14 points, his second-worst effort of the season, as the Spurs dropped their fourth straight road contest and suffered their worst loss of the season. San Antonio, which has lost four of its last five games overall, got no closer than 15 points in the second half.

Drexler hit a 12-foot baseline jumper with 4:56 left in the first period to give Houston the lead for good, 19-17. Willis scored 12 points in the opening quarter as the Rockets took a 33-28 edge.

The Spurs cut the deficit to 36-35 with 10:10 to go in the second quarter but Houston took control by closing the period with a 24-7 run. Mario Elie had six of his 13 points during that stretch and Eddie Johnson, who also scored 13, sank a 12-foot jumper with 29 seconds left, increasing the lead to 60-42.

"We didn't respond during their second-quarter run and the better team clearly won tonight," Robinson said. "We have mistakes that are certainly correctible, but we must maintain our focus."

"Right now our team chemistry is fantastic," Elie said. "Everything is clicking. Everybody's sharing the ball, everybody's happy and everybody's playing defense."

Avery Johnson, who handed out eight assists, hit a layup to pull the Spurs within 68-53, but they were unable to cut the deficit any further. Houston responded with a 20-8 run, keyed by Drexler's eight points. Matt Maloney drained two three-pointers in that spurt as the Rockets built an insurmountable 88-61 lead.

"Clyde Drexler was phenomenal tonight," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "He did a good job picking apart their defense.

"I thought we showed great concentration tonight," Tomjanovich added. "We jumped ahead to a 20-point lead and still didn't lose our focus. That's the most unselfish I've seen us play on both ends of the floor this year. Right now we're so much fun to watch."

Willis made 8-of-12 from the field as Houston shot 53 percent (40-of-76). San Antonio connected on just 34 percent (31-of-90), including a horrific 8-of-42 (19 percent) from its bench.

"We weren't sharp in the second quarter and the hottest team in basketball took advantage of us," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "They are playing fundamental, unselfish basketball without Hakeem (Olajuwon) and are a real force to be reckoned with in the West."

Tim Duncan scored 13 points, Sean Elliott added 12 and Vinny Del Negro 11 for the Spurs, who have lost four straight against the Rockets. Duncan and Robinson grabbed nine boards apiece but San Antonio was still outrebounded, 46-43.
