GAME RECAP

David Robinson had 30 points and nine rebounds and Avery Johnson handed out a career-high 20 assists as the San Antonio Spurs ended a season-high three-game losing streak by cruising to a 102-87 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Robinson made 18-of-20 free throws to match his own team record and rookie Tim Duncan tallied 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Spurs, who rebounded from their worst loss of the season. Robinson, who also had 18 free throws in a 106-98 win at Golden State on March 12th, 1996, had just 14 points in Tuesday's 108-78 loss at Houston.

"Defensively we did a nice job the first half," Robinson said. "Offensively we got fast breaks and when we make easy buckets it makes things a lot easier. This last week everything has been gong slow. Ninety percent of this game is confidence and it feels great to win again. We got some great turnovers tonight and then got up the floor well."

Johnson had 12 assists as San Antonio jumped to a 34-22 lead after the opening quarter. The Spurs had lost their last six games against Los Angeles but improved to 39-7 all-time at home against the Clippers.

"We wanted to get the stops and get some baskets at the end," Johnson said. "(Coach Gregg) Popovich had mentioned one time to get me 20 assists. Every other coach would have mentioned it but Pop's not like that. It just worked out well that I got 20. We ran the break well tonight and we made shots. This is like a 10-K race, we're just not there yet. We have a lot of work to do. Our expectations are so high and we were disappointed coming into the game."

Rodney Rogers scored 12 points, while Brent Barry and Eric Piatkowski each added 11 for the Clippers, who were denied their first two-game winning streak of the season and fell to 4-17. Barry had missed the last six games with a contusion of his lower left leg suffered in a 104-92 loss to the New Jersey Nets on November 28th.

"He was running all right," said Los Angeles coach Bill Fitch about Barry. "He looked good at the foul line and hit his free throws. In the 22 minutes he played, he looked good."

The Spurs opened the game with a 17-4 advantage when Sean Elliott sank a three-pointer with 7:48 left in the first quarter. Piatowski had a three-pointer to cap an 11-4 run and cut San Antonio's lead to 21-15 with 4:07 left in the first. Duncan had eight of his points in the first as the Spurs held a 34-22 advantage.

"The first quarter spot we gave them was big," Fitch said. "We made a good run in the third, but in the fourth we sent them to the line too many times. In the first quarter they shot like dynamite. If they shot like that every night, they'd be first in the Midwest."

Robinson scored eight points as San Antonio opened the second with a 16-6 burst to take a 50-28 lead on Elliott's basket with 5:11 to go. Los Angeles closed the second with a 12-2 surge and San Antonio had a 57-45 lead at the break.

Rookie Keith Closs, who matched his career high with 10 points, capped a 12-1 run to pull the Clippers within 64-59 with 6:24 left in the third. Vinny Del Negro, who had 22 points, sank a three-pointer to give the Spurs a 67-59 lead with 6:05 to go in the third. Maurice Taylor, who had 10 points, made a pair of free throws to cut San Antonio's lead to 73-70 with 53 seconds left in the third. But Robinson answered with a pair of free throws 11 seconds later and the Clippers came no closer.

"We made some big shots, we moved better and we ran," Del Negro said. "We ran some more pick and rolls tonight and we flowed well throughout the game. The Clippers can be a tough team to play because they play such strange lineups. They move a lot of guys around especially with their big men."
