GAME RECAP

Rick Fox scored a season-high 30 points, Kobe Bryant added a career-high 27 and the duo sparked a pivotal late third-quarter run as the Los Angeles Lakers snapped the Houston Rockets' nine-game winning streak, 119-102.

After a seven-foot hook shot by Kevin Willis drew the Rockets within 69-68 with 3:51 left in the third quarter, the Lakers closed the period with a 16-4 burst. Bryant scored nine points and Fox added a pair of steals and a breakaway layup.

Fox had 10 points in the quarter as the Lakers made 13-of-22 shots and took an 85-72 advantage into the final 12 minutes.

"I had more of an offensive night," Fox said. "It felt good to look up and see that margin of 15 or 16 points we are used to having."

"We needed this win pretty bad," said Bryant. "We've had a three-game slide, and in our first game back, it is nice to come back with a win. When you get into a groove like that it seems like you can pinpoint things that you want to do even before you do them."

Houston, which was seeking for its longest winning streak in more than four years, would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way. Clyde Drexler led the Rockets with 21 points and Charles Barkley chipped in 18 and 14 rebounds.

"We had a horrendous second half," said Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "You have got to give them credit, they played real well. But if you take the chaos out of it, and grind it out, we're real good in the fourth quarter. When its a nip-and-tuck game and they blow it open, I got to give them credit."

Fox made 12-of-15 shots from the field and Bryant scored all of his points in a 16-minute span for the Lakers, who were beaten on the boards, 49-42. Eddie Jones added 16 points for Los Angeles, which snapped a three-game losing streak.

"The key man in the game was Rick Fox," said Lakers coach Del Harris. "Kobe scored his points in the fourth quarter when we were already starting to put them away. He was kind of exciting but I hope the fans did not miss what Rick was doing while we were struggling. That was his best game as a Laker."

Drexler had 10 points in the first quarter as the Rockets took a 24-23 lead. The game remained tight into the second quarter and Los Angeles trailed just 51-49 at the break.

The Lakers began the third quarter with a 12-2 run, highlighted by Fox's five points. Elden Campbell scored four of his 13 points in the spurt, which left the Lakers with a 61-53 advantage. But the Rockets would answer and draw within a point on Willis' hook.

Campbell sparked the pivotal burst with a layup and Derek Fisher pushed the lead to 73-68 with a basket. Bryant sank two free throws but Matt Bullard hit a layup off a feed from Drexler, who had six assists.

Corie Blount sank a free throw for a 76-70 lead and Fox followed with a steal and a layup. Bullard hit two free throws before Bryant scored the final seven points of the quarter.

"Kobe came alive. Kobe was incredible," said Drexler. "I really love his game. He reminds me of a guy named Michael Jordan. He is a phenomenal player. This was not a game for him, it was an exhibition."

Barkley hit two free throws to open the fourth quarter but Houston would get no closer. In fact, the Lakers would extend the advantage to 23 points following a three-point play by Bryant, who had 18 in the period.

The Lakers had 33 fast-break points to the Rockets' eight.
