GAME RECAP

Steve Smith scored 22 points as the Atlanta Hawks snapped a three-game losing streak with an 83-74 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, who matched their lowest output of the season.

Christian Laettner had 21 points and 12 rebounds and Tyrone Corbin scored 16 points for the Hawks, who defeated the Clippers for the seventh straight time. Atlanta allowed less than 20 points in three quarters as it remained unbeaten against Los Angeles since March 25th, 1994.

"We did not play as well as I would have liked," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "But we won the game and that is the bottom line when you're playing on the road."

Rookie Keith Closs scored a season-high 15 points for the Clippers, who have dropped four of five. Lamond Murray and Lorenzen Wright contributed 12 points apiece.

Atlanta took charge early, using an 18-4 first-quarter burst to open an 11-point lead. After Stojko Vrankovic's five-footer gave the Clippers an early 7-4 lead, Smith scored eight points in the spurt, which gave the Hawks a 22-11 advantage after Corbin's layup with 3:25 left. Atlanta led by 14 points after one period as Smith and Laettner combined for 17 points, two more than the Clippers.

Los Angeles came right back in the second quarter, scoring the first 11 points of the period to close within 29-26 with 7:53 left in the quarter a 20-footer by Eric Piatkowski, who scored all nine of his points in the first five minutes of the quarter.

"I got some good looks in the second quarter when I came in," Piatkowski said. "I also had some good looks in the second half but I just couldn't convert them."

The Clippers briefly took the lead late in the period, but the Hawks scored the final seven points of the half to take a 44-41 lead into the break.

A dunk by Closs brought the Clippers within 50-49 with 5:58 left in the third quarter, but Dikembe Mutombo fueled a 14-4 run with eight points as the Hawks opened a 64-53 cushion with 45 seconds remaining in the period. Atlanta took a 64-55 lead into the last 12 minutes.

"We made a great run at the beginning but in the second quarter we tried too hard and they got back in the game," Mutombo said. "In the third and fourth quarters we just took the game away from them."

The Hawks extended their lead to 74-61 on Laettner's bucket with 5:09 to play before the Clippers made a final charge. A layup by rookie Maurice Taylor capped an 11-2 run and cut the lead to 76-72 with 1:51 remaining. But Smith made a layup 15 seconds later, and after Taylor had a shot blocked, Smith made two free throws to give the Hawks an 80-72 lead with 58 seconds left.

Mutombo recorded 14 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots for the Hawks, who shot 43 percent (33-of-77) from the field. Blaylock shot just 3-of-13 but grabbed nine rebounds and handed out 10 assists as the Hawks held a 44-34 rebounding advantage.

Taylor finished with eight points for the Clippers, who shot 44 percent (33-of-75) and had 19 turnovers against 13 assists. Los Angeles, which also was held to 74 points by Portland on November 1st, hit just 5-of-11 free throws and 3-of-17 three-pointers.
