GAME RECAP

Rik Smits scored 10 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter and tied a season high with 13 rebounds as the Indiana Pacers notched their second-best free-throw shooting performance ever and rallied for a 109-92 victory over the Washington Wizards.

A three-point play by Ledell Eackles pulled Washington within 81-78 with 9:07 to play when the Pacers reeled off six straight points. Dale Davis dunked off a fast break, Reggie Miller sank two free throws and Smits drained a jumper for an 87-78 edge.

A foul shot by Chris Webber, who scored 31 points, cut the deficit to 91-85 with 4:56 to go, but Smits scored six points down the stretch as Indiana ended the game with an 18-7 run. Smits hit an 11-foot jumper to increase the advantage to 97-85 and his two free throws gave the Pacers their biggest lead, 106-86, with 1:36 remaining.

"He (Smits) had some great looks in the first half, but couldn't knock them down," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "If he gets it going, like he did in the second half, we keep going to him."

Miller scored 22 points and Davis added 13 and nine rebounds for the Pacers, who have won 10 of 14 since a 2-5 start. Indiana, which improved to 5-0 when Smits leads the team in scoring, snapped a three-game losing streak against Washington.

"Smits was a factor in the post," Webber said. "They did a good job at exploiting their matchups. They got it done all night."

Smits and Miller both were 7-of-7 from the line as Indiana hit 97 percent (31-of-32) of its free throws, coming up just short of a 21-of-21 effort on December 14th, 1989 at New Jersey.

"I think we're a better ballclub and we're starting to come together," Bird added. "It's coming, but we've still got a long way to go."

Juwan Howard fouled out with 18 points for the Wizards, who have lost seven of their last eight road games.

"We just got to get together offensively," Wizards coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "We are not doing a good job of ball movement."

Washington led 55-46 early in the third period when the Pacers reeled off eight straight points. Davis scored six of his nine third-quarter points in that spurt, hitting consecutive baskets to cut the deficit to one with 8:55 remaining.

A three-point play by Chris Mullin gave the Pacers the lead, 64-63, but the Wizards responded with their own 8-0 run. Former Indiana Hoosier Calbert Cheaney, who scored 13 points, sparked the spurt with a short jumper before Webber, Howard and Tracy Murray all hit from the outside to make it 71-64.

The Pacers came back once again, finishing the period with an 11-2 run to take the lead for good. A three-pointer by Travis Best with 7.1 seconds left gave Indiana a 75-73 lead.

"It's very big to get this win and not have a letdown after last night," Mullin said. "We weren't happy with how we played the first half, so in the second half, coach Bird asked us to force things a little bit."

Indiana made 6-of-14 from behind the arc, including 3-of-4 by Miller. Washington hit just 1-of-8 from three-point range.

Miller's three-pointer tied the game, 37-37, midway through the second quarter before the Wizards went on a 12-2 run. Webber hit back-to-back buckets before Howard dunked and made two free throws to build a 49-39 lead with 2:53 to go.

Smits answered with a jumper and Miller converted a three-point play, but Webber's jumper with 2.4 seconds left gave Washington a 53-46 halftime lead.

"We missed a lot of open shots in the first half and weren't as active as I would have liked us to be," Bird said. "But in the second half, our defense stepped up and we made some shots. We've been playing pretty well in the fourth quarter."

Washington's Rod Strickland handed out nine assists but scored just eight points on 3-of-12 shooting. The Wizards shot 41 percent (34-of-83) and were outrebounded, 44-38.

"I think we played well, I think we played hard, we just didn't put the ball in the hole," Strickland said.
