GAME RECAP

Sam Mitchell scored a season-high 24 points and Stephon Marbury scored six straight points down the stretch as the Minnesota Timberwolves pulled away for a 112-101 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Marbury, who had just six points in the first three periods, gave the Timberwolves the lead for good at 98-87 with a driving layup with 2:08 remaining. Marbury missed the free throw after he was fouled, but following a turnover by Phoenix, his layup made it 100-97 with 1:33 remaining.

"They told me that Steve Nash fouled him," said Phoenix forward Danny Manning about Marbury's go-ahead basket. "Now if Steve Nash fouled him, obviously he was out on the floor. That's what he (referee Ron Olesiak) told me, but he might have changed his mind going to the scorer's table."

George McCloud missed a three-pointer from the right wing and Marbury hit a runner from just inside the free-throw line for a 102-97 advantage with 57 seconds to go. Nash then missed three-pointers on consecutive possessions, and after each one, Tom Gugliotta sank a pair of free throws, giving the Wolves a 106-97 advantage.

"This was a good win tonight," Gugliotta said. "We played the right way and played good defense down the stretch. If we play like that we''ll win our share of games."

Kevin Garnett had 20 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for Minnesota, which stopped a three-game losing streak and won for the fifth time in the last six meetings with the Suns.

"We've played well against Phoenix the last couple of years," said Minnesota coach Flip Saunders. "We played well in New York and it's nice to come back and have another good effort. We've had two good efforts in a row. I think that's the main thing you look for is to come out and give a good effort. If you give an effort enough times you're going to come out on the plus side enough times."

Jason Kidd recorded 20 points, eight assists and five rebounds and Cedric Ceballos tallied 20 points for the Suns, who still lead the all-time series, 28-6.

Minnesota jumped out to a 25-16 lead when Chris Carr made a 20-footer with 3:42 left in the first period. But Ceballos had five points as the Suns ended the first quarter with a 15-5 run, tying it 31-31 when Kidd hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Mitchell's three-pointer capped a 7-1 burst and gave the Wolves a 40-34 lead with 8:54 left in the second. Antonio McDyess, who had eight points, dunked to cut Minnesota's lead to 44-42 with 5:51 left, but Minnesota rebuilt the lead to 59-54 at halftime.

The Suns took their first lead since the opening period when McCloud made a free throw for a 66-65 edge with 7:23 left in the third period. Phoenix took its biggest lead when Ceballos hit a layup for a 72-68 advantage with 4:54 remaining. Kidd hit a three-pointer with five seconds left to give the Suns an 82-81 edge.

The lead changed hands five times and there were three ties in the fourth quarter before Marbury's layup with 2:16 left.
