GAME RECAP

Kobe Bryant scored a career-high 30 points as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Dallas Mavericks for the 11th straight time, 119-89.

Bryant established a career high for the second time in as many games despite scoring in just two quarters. He netted 16 of his team's 31 points in the second period and added 14 in the fourth, surpassing his 27-point effort against Houston on Friday. Bryant scored all of his points in that game in a 16-minute span.

"It's nice, as long as we came out of here with this 'W'," Bryant said. "That was the most important thing to us as a team. I wanted to have some fun. It's cool, but I'm going to be around here for a long time and set some more career highs."

Rick Fox contributed 19 points and Eddie Jones 17 for the Lakers, who defeated the Mavericks for the 14th consecutive time at the Great Western Forum. Los Angeles has claimed 38 of the last 43 meetings between the clubs.

Michael Finley and Dennis Scott scored 18 points apiece for the Mavericks, who have lost five straight under new coach Don Nelson and 17 of their last 19 overall.

"I was very disappointed with our performance tonight but that is going to happen," Nelson said. "We knew we were playing the best team that we had played this year. I thought we stayed in our game plan, at least for a while. You know it's kind of tough once you get down by 20. You have to forget about any game plan you have."

Fox had 10 points in a 19-4 burst of a six-minute span of the first quarter as the Lakers raced to a 23-10 lead. But Scott also scored 10 in the period as the Mavericks closed within 27-20 entering the second.

The 19-year old Bryant then led the Lakers in an extended burst. After Los Angeles scored eight straight points to open a 39-26 lead, Dallas scored the next four points to close within 39-30 with 7:45 left in the period. But Robert Horry made two straight buckets as the Lakers reeled off nine consecutive points. Bryant buried two three-pointers in the 18-6 run, which he also capped with a layup with 4:27 left in the half that extended the lead to 49-30.

The Lakers had a 58-43 halftime lead and enjoyed at least a 12-point cushion throughout the second half. Jones scored 10 points in the third quarter, and Fox netted his other nine as Los Angeles boosted its lead to 87-70.

"We just got done playing five games in eight days so we had a tough time," Los Angeles coach Del Harris said. "But guys are back to where we wanted to be, so we just have to keep the momentum going. We had the fastbreak going awfully well tonight."

Los Angeles coasted in the fourth, feeding Bryant so he could eclipse his high. He drilled a three-pointer with 16 seconds to play to surpass his previous high. An acrobatic dunk ahead of the field with 5.2 seconds to go capped his 14-point period.

Elden Campbell finished with 15 points and eight rebounds for the Lakers, who shot 57 percent (47-of-82) from the field and held a 42-35 rebounding advantage.

Samaki Walker and Davis had 13 points each and Martin Muursepp chipped in 10 for the Mavericks, who shot 42 percent (38-of-84). Dallas had just 12 assists against 13 turnovers.
