GAME RECAP

Michael Jordan bounced back from his worst game of the season to score 12 of his 31 points in the second quarter as the Chicago Bulls extended their home winning streak to six games with a 111-104 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Toni Kukoc added 23 points and Jason Caffey came off the bench to record season highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulls, who matched a season high in points set in their 111-102 double-overtime victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on November 21st.

Jordan, who was held to a season-low 11 points on 4-of-16 shooting in the Bulls' 97-70 rout over Toronto on Saturday, scored four points each in two separate second-quarter runs for Chicago, which rolled to a 66-43 halftime lead.

The Bulls ran their lead to as many as 26 points before Phoenix made the final margin respectable by outscoring Chicago 40-28 in the fourth quarter. Chicago also avenged an 89-85 loss at Phoenix on November 20th.

Antonio McDyess and Cedric Ceballos each had season highs with 23 and 22 points, respectively, for the Suns. Phoenix, which has lost five straight in Chicago, dropped its third straight road game overall.

The game was Chicago's 500th consecutive home sellout dating back to home games at Chicago Stadium, which was torn down in favor of the present, ultra-modern United Center.

Phoenix pulled within 35-29 on a pair of free throws by Ceballos before the Bulls went on a 10-2 burst. Ron Harper hit a seven-footer before Jordan added two free throws. A basket by George McCloud pulled the Suns within 39-31, but Caffey threw down a dunk and seven-footer around a 14-foot jumper by Jordan to make it 45-31 with 6:13 remaining.

The Bulls then put the game out of reach with an 11-0 spurt over a 3:08 span late in the first half. Jordan hit a jumper before Kukoc buried a three-pointer to make it 60-41 with 2:19 to go. Randy Brown had a steal and layup before Jordan hit two free throws. Kukoc capped the burst with a layup to make it 66-41 with 3.9 seconds to go.

"I thought we played as good a first half as any all year," said Jordan. "We came out and executed offensively and maintained our intensity on defense. Unfortunately, we couldn't sustain that for the entire game."

"I thought we put together a pretty good first half," said Bulls coach Phil Jackson, echoing Jordan's thoughts. "But like in so many games this year, we have trouble putting together a good 48 minutes. I think gradually we'll get to that, but it's taking us way too long."

Chicago took its largest lead of the game at 77-51 following two free throws by Harper with 4:53 to play. Harper finished with 15 points and Brown 14 off the bench for the Bulls, who shot 46 percent (36-of-79) from the field and scored 26 points off 19 Phoenix turnovers.

"We're still trying to play a complete game," said Kukoc. "We had a great first half, but we couldn't maintain it. I feel good about my game right now, I'm putting up more productive minutes for the team. We just need the bench to come on and play a little more consistently."

The absence of center Luc Longley, who was out with a sprained right foot, may have helped Chicago match up better with the smaller Suns. Dennis Rodman grabbed 21 rebounds and the Bulls enjoyed a 35-17 advantage in free throws made as Jordan, Harper and Brown combined for 27 in 31 attempts.

Phoenix shot 44 percent (41-of-93) from the floor. McDyess and McCloud fouled out as the Suns were whistled for 34 personal fouls.

"The second quarter killed us," admitted Suns coach Danny Ainge. "I don't know what they shot from the field, but even when they missed, they somehow managed to get the offensive board. They just outhustled us."
