GAME RECAP

Kevin Willis scored 23 points and Clyde Drexler added 22 and 10 assists as the Houston Rockets avenged a loss to the Vancouver Grizzlies with a 118-91 victory.

Matt Malone chipped in 14 points for Houston, which won its seventh straight home game and is 5-0 lifetime against the Grizzlies at the Compaq Center. The Grizzlies defeated the Rockets on Sunday in Vancouver, 110-105.

"What a difference 48 hours make," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "We talked a lot about our lack of defense in our two (prior) defeats. I was extremely pleased with our active hands. We shook some things loose and got some easy baskets. It was a fun game tonight."

Drexler had five steals to pass Alvin Robertson and move into fourth place all-time with 2,117 in his career.

"I had no clue about that," Drexler said. "It is an honor, but it is important to remember that that is since they have been keeping records. I got my hands on a couple of balls because we had extremely good interior defense tonight."

Vancouver, which was denied the first three-game winning streak in franchise history, got 18 points from Shareef Abdur-Rahim.

The Grizzlies, who have won consecutive games on numerous occasions in their brief history, also still are searching for their 10th win, a number they did not reach last season until their 53rd game on February 12th.

"When you play a team back-to-back, I think the team that loses the first game gets the advantage in the other one," said Grizzlies coach Brian Hill. "We were no match for them tonight. They are an elite team and they played with great energy tonight. When they play like they did tonight, they are very difficult to defeat."

The Rockets trailed 17-14 midway through the first period before taking control late in the first quarter with a 15-5 spurt over the last 4:02 of the period. After Charles Barkley's layup tied the game at 19-19, Maloney made a jumper with just over three minutes to play that put Houston on top for good.

Vancouver trailed 35-28 one minute into the second quarter before Houston went on a 16-4 run over the next 6 1/2 minutes. Drexler started the run with a layup and Willis, who had eight points during the outburst, added a jumper for a 39-28 advantage.

Maloney provided a 51-32 bulge with a three-pointer with just over four minutes left halftime.

The Grizzlies closed to 64-50 midway through the third quarter but got no closer. Houston led by as many as 31 points in the game's final minute.

Houston shot 52 percent (44-of-85) from the floor and is 8-1 when shooting better than 45 percent. Willis was 9-of-16 from the field while Drexler hit 9-of-15. The Rockets also made 9-of-23 three-pointers.

"We won the game pretty easily, the way we are supposed to win," said Barkley. "It was a good easy night for us."

Vancouver shot 43 percent (34-of-80) and was victimized by 23 turnovers, including seven by Abdur-Rahim. The Grizzlies were outrebounded, 45-38, and managed just 15 assists.

"We didn't come out with the focus or energy like we did at home," Abdur-Rahim said. "Drexler was a lot more aggresive tonight. I think they took it personally that they lost to us on Sunday. They raised their game up and we didn't."

Vancouver forward Otis Thorp, a former Rocket, has a strained tendon in his left knee and did not dress.
