GAME RECAP

Joe Smith scored a season-high 28 points and Donyell Marshall added 22 as the Golden State Warriors defeated former coach Don Nelson and the Dallas Mavericks, 103-92, for their fourth straight home victory.

Erick Dampier scored 12 of his 17 points in the first half for the Warriors, who held a 49-42 halftime lead after opening an 11-point bulge midway through the second quarter.

"Donyell Marshall has stepped up, is more aggressive and more relaxed. He's playing at a higher level," said Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo. "In fact, he may be the best rebounder in the league."

Dallas' Robert Pack cut what had been a 12-point deficit down to eight points with 8:13 left, but the Warriors went on a 15-6 run, which Tony Delk capped with a free throw with 3:02 to go to give Golden State a 97-80 lead.

Michael Finley had 26 points and Dennis Scott 19 for the struggling Mavericks, who have dropped six straight games and 17 of 19 overall. Dallas is 1-6 under Nelson and 5-18 overall.

"I had great times here," said Nelson, who coached the Warriors from 1988-95, posting a 277-260 regular-season record. "I hope that it will be like that in Dallas some day, too."

The Warriors used a 13-3 run over the first and second quarters to open a 34-25 cushion, and went ahead 40-29 with 4:36 left in the second when Marshall finished a fast break with a dunk.

Golden State hit 54.5 percent (12-of-22) of its shots in the second quarter and held the Mavs to just 36 percent en route to a 49-42 halftime lead.

Smith added nine rebounds and Marshall nine and six assists for the Warriors, who shot 52 percent (43-of-83) from the field and outscored Dallas in the paint, 54-38. Felton Spencer added a season-high 13 rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench and Delk had 13 points.

"We have no centers," said Nelson, referring to the absence of the injured Shawn Bradley. "We're playing with power forwards at the center spot, we're trying to fill the holes the best we can."

Samaki Walker netted a career-high 17 points and eight rebounds and Finley and A.C. Green grabbed 10 boards apiece as the Mavs shot 39 percent and lost their seventh consecutive road contest.
