GAME RECAP

Vlade Divac had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Anthony Mason scored 19 points as the Charlotte Hornets extended their winning streak to five games with a 99-90 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, avenging an early-season loss.

David Wesley collected 17 points and a team season-high 12 assists for Charlotte, which equaled its longest winning streak of the season. Charlotte, which also won five in a row from November 15th-25th, had three winning streaks of four or more games last season, when it won 54 games.

"I was able to penetrate very effectively tonight," said Wesley. "That is something that I need to do more of. Everybody got a lot of touches tonight. We got a lot of easy dunks and layups. We have been able to turn to our defense late in the games to secure our victories."

The Hornets lost to Milwaukee, 102-92, on December 4th.

Glenn Robinson scored 24 points for Milwaukee, which has lost four in a row and fell below the .500 mark for the first time this season. The Bucks' last four-game losing streak was from April 3rd-10th of last season.

Milwaukee led 30-28 early in the second quarter before Charlotte went on a 20-2 run over a six-minute span. Mason, who had eight points during the spurt, capped it with a tip-in with 4:18 to play in the half.

The Hornets led 59-43 at halftime and pushed the advantage to 72-55 late in the third quarter before the Bucks rallied. Milwaukee ran off 16 of the next 18 points, beginning when Ervin Johnson tipped in a missed shot with 3:22 remaining in the quarter.

Robinson, who connected on 10-of-16 from the field and had seven points during the outburst, capped it with a three-pointer 1:40 into the final period to cut the deficit to 74-71.

But Milwaukee would come no closer, pulling within 85-82 on Ray Allen's free throw with just over four minutes to play.

"Our team showed a lot of resilience tonight," said Mason. "We did not want to make it another close one down the stretch. There was a lot of unselfish play. It was a great team effort. Our offense has a lot of playmakers that can come up and make big plays when we need them."

Charlotte ripped off the next six points. After David Wesley hit one foul shot and Divac scored on a tip-in, Wesley hit a three-pointer with 2:28 remaining that gave the Hornets a 91-82 lead and sealed the win.

Tyrone Hill pulled down 18 rebounds for Milwaukee, which had a 33-31 rebounding edge but was dominated in points in the paint, 62-26. No other Milwaukee player had more than four boards.

"We have to start taking care of the ball in key situations," said Hill. "We need to focus on our strenghths and correct our weaknesses. With the way we are playing, I see no easy games ahead. I am just trying to play hard and do my job. We are NBA players and we should know how to cut down on our mistakes."

Charlotte shot 55 percent (41-of-75) from the field while holding Milwaukee to 47 percent (31-of-66). The Bucks committed 18 turnovers to the Hornets' 12.

"We are shooting 55 percent from the floor and taking care of the basketball. That's important," said Charlotte coach Dave Cowens. "Our defense is going to win ballgames. You are going to get some games like this all year long. Teams will always try to come back because this is a very competitive division."

"What can I say?" asked Bucks coach Chris Ford. "We fight like (heck) to make defensive stops and then we go down and can't get a good look at the basket. Then we have to get another big stop and the same thing happens. You just have to make plays."

The all-time series is even at 20-20.
