GAME RECAP

Antoine Walker and rookie Chauncey Billups each scored 18 points and Walter McCarty hit a key three-pointer in the final minute, lifting the Boston Celtics to an 88-83 win over the Toronto Raptors, who have lost 11 straight home games.

With the game tied 79-79, McCarty drained a three-pointer from the right side to give the Celtics the lead for good with 58 seconds left. Boston made 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch, including four straight from Billups, to preserve its fifth straight win over Toronto.

"It was a big shot. It was a blessing. I'm just thankful I was able to knock it down and help our team," McCarty said. "I have confidence in my shot and the team is starting to have confidence in me, because lately I've been knocking a lot of them down."

The Raptors pulled within three points twice in the final minute, the last time at 86-83 following a jumper by Reggie Slater with 12 seconds to go. But they could get no closer.

McCarty chipped in 12 points and Walker had nine rebounds and six assists for Boston, which snapped a four-game road losing streak.

"We're happy to come away with a victory. It wasn't our best performance, but we're pleased to get the win," said Boston coach Rick Pitino. "We made big defensive plays when we had to and it's always exciting to get a road victory."

Teenage rookie Tracy McGrady scored a season-high 17 points to lead the Raptors, who have lost 20 of their last 21 games. Doug Christie added 15 points.

"It was a good performance but we still didn't come out on top," said McGrady. "We're just struggling, but we're not gonna give up. I like to get out and run and that's what I did tonight."

Toronto center Oliver Miller had guaranteed a victory before the game and was upset afterward.

"We need to find some kind of fire. This is ridiculous, we're 2-22," Miller said. "I'd do it (guarantee) again. If we shot better than 38.5 percent (30-for-78), the guarantee would've come through. We just have to go out and make our shots. We need to take some responsibility for ourselves."

"I'll take all the blame. I'm 325 pounds and I can take 325 pounds of pressure. The fans can throw cupcakes at me, or whatever, I'm still gonna bust my butt every night."

Boston's biggest lead of the second half was 54-44 with 6:37 left in the third quarter. The Celtics closed the quarter with a 66-61 lead.

Toronto stayed close in the fourth period and finally pulled even at 79-79, following a pair of free throws by McGrady with 1:20 left.

On Boston's next trip, McCarty's three-pointer lifted Boston into a lead it would not surrender.

"He's got a lot of confidence right now and that's great," said Pitino. "It's funny, when he let it go you knew it was good the entire way. There was no doubt."

With Slater, Christie and Miller each chipping in four points, the Raptors grabebd a 22-17 lead after the first quarter.

Boston responded by opening the second quarter on a 12-3 burst, and Ron Mercer's jumper with 8:38 left in the half gave the Celts a 25-24 advantage. Although Toronto would tie in the game in the fourth quarter, it would never lead again.

"I'm looking at our opponents and they're all shooting wide-open jumpers and getting uncontested layups and stuff like that," said Damon Stoudamire, who only shot 2-for-13 and finished with eight points. "We're taking tough shots every time down the court. We've all been taking tough shots the whole season."
