GAME RECAP

Kendall Gill scored nine of his 22 points over the final 2:52 and rookie Keith Van Horn continued to impress as the New Jersey Nets stiffened down the stretch and snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Detroit Pistons with a 105-101 victory.

New Jersey led by 15 points after three quarters before Detroit climbed back, pulling within 91-90 on two free throws from Grant Hill with 3:10 to play. Eighteen seconds later, Gill got hot, slamming home a thunderous dunk and hitting a free throw for a three-point play.

The Pistons fought back once again, tying it at 96-96 on a pair from the line by Jerome Williams with 86 seconds to play. But Van Horn converted a three-point play and Gill followed with a deep three-pointer from the right side around Hill's free throw to put New Jersey ahead to stay, 102-97.

"We've got a lot of go to guys, tonight was just my night," said Gill. "If we had lost this one, it would have been terrible. I was just trying to win the game."

Indiana's Brian Williams was disgusted by his team's lack of defensive execution down the stretch.

"I was screaming in the huddle, 'let's stop them right here,'" Williams said. "And guys are like, 'as long as my man doesn't score.'"

Van Horn and Kerry Kittles scored 20 points apiece and Sam Cassell netted 19 as the Nets beat Detroit for the first time since February 6th, 1995.

Hill, who was limited to 10 points Tuesday in a loss to the New York Knicks, finished with 25 points.

Brian Williams had 18 points and 10 rebounds and reserves Malik Sealy and Jerome Williams added 15 and 13 points, respectively as Detroit lost despite shooting a respectable 49 percent (38-of-78).

"We need to have attitude late in the game, make them do something great to beat us," said Williams. "I'm sick of it, I don't know if everyone else is sick of it. You got to give five to 10 percent more. Every person has got to be telling himself that."

Van Horn did the scoring and Williams swept the backboards in the first quarter. The rookie scored nine points -- including five of the last seven -- and Williams grabbed seven of his 22 boards as the Nets hit 57 percent of their shots and took a 28-27 lead.

But the Pistons were able to build a 47-40 lead midway through the second quarter on a dunk by Theo Ratliff. Three-pointers by Van Horn, Cassell and David Benoit allowed New Jersey to close to 54-53 at halftime.

With the scored tied 60-60 in the third quarter, Van Horn scored six of the next eight points as New Jersey forged ahead, 68-61.

"I'm starting to feel my groove with the team," Van Horn said. "I just try to take advantage of the opportunities. If they are giving me the jumper, I am going to take it."

New Jersey's Williams scored 13 points and tied a season high with 15 defensive boards. Cassell dished out 11 assists and Benoit added eight points off the bench for New Jersey, which shot 46 percent (39-of-84) from the field and held a 45-39 edge on the glass.
