GAME RECAP

David Robinson scored 33 points and Avery Johnson tied a career high with 20 assists as the San Antonio Spurs erased a third-quarter deficit and cruised to their fourth straight win, 97-88 over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Rookie Tim Duncan added 19 points, 13 rebounds and a season-high seven blocks and Sean Elliott netted 14 before fouling out for the Spurs, who also won their fourth straight home game.

"I think the teams as a whole looked tired in the first half," sdaid Elliott. "We had to fight. It was a good win for us and we picked it up defensively."

Trailing 61-52 early in the third period, San Antonio charged ahead with a 14-2 run, taking a one-point lead on a bucket by Robinson with 5:04 left. The teams exchanged baskets for two minutes before a slam by Duncan put the Spurs ahead for good, 70-69.

"For the most part I was pleased with our effort tonight, (but) the third quarter was a big swing in their favor momentum-wise," said Vancouver coach Brian Hill. "We got hurt in transition defense as well tonight. David Robinson shot as well from the perimeter as I've ever seen tonight. I don't think he hit the rim once in the second half. All of his shots hit nothing but the bottom of the net."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 25 points, Bryant Reeves added 23 and rookie Antonio Daniels had 14, 10 rebounds and six assists for the Grizzlies, who suffered their third consecutive road loss.

Robinson pulled down 11 rebounds and had three of his teams' 12 blocks and Monty Williams had 11 points off the bench for the Spurs, which shot 48 percent (39-of-82) from the field.

"We didn't have an answer for Big Country (Reeves), he made a lot of big shots," said Johnson, who had just one turnover. "When we shoot over 45 percent, we win a lot of games."

Jaren Jackson scored nine points as San Antonio equaled its longest winning streak of the season and moved within one game of first-place Houston in the Midwest.

Vancouver fell behind 74-69 after three periods, but began the fourth quarter with a bucket to close within three points. But Duncan pumped in his only points of the period, a lay-in and foul shot to complete the three-point play and begin the rout.

Reserve George Lynch had 11 points for the Grizzlies, who were limited to 38 percent (33-of-86) from the field and outscored 48-32 in the paint.
