GAME RECAP

Elden Campbell scored six pivotal points in the final minutes and finished with 18 as the Los Angeles Lakers held on for a 98-96 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Campbell's jumper with 1:50 to play gave the Lakers a 96-91 edge before Atlanta's Christian Laettner answered with a 10-footer just 15 seconds later. Campbell sank a pair of free throws with 1:16 left, increasing the lead to 98-93, but Mookie Blaylock's three-pointer cut the deficit to two.

Kobe Bryant scored nine of his 19 points in the fourth quarter for Los Angeles but took an ill-advised, fallaway jumper and the Hawks' Dikembe Mutombo pulled down the rebound with 15 seconds to go.

Campbell blocked Steve Smith's three-point attempt, but Mutombo grabbed the loose ball and was fouled by Robert Horry with two-tenths of a second remaining. With a chance to send the game to overtime, Mutombo missed the first free throw and the Hawks were unable to get the rebound after he intentionally missed the second.

"I just had the feel that he (Mutombo) would miss," Lakers coach Del Harris said of the final free throws.

The Lakers rebounded for their fourth win in the last five games after suffering their worst loss of the season, 104-83 at Chicago on Wednesday. They also tied the Hawks for the second-best record in the league at 19-6, trailing only the Seattle SuperSonics (20-5).

"It's big, it's real big," said Campbell, who also grabbed eight rebounds. "We were down our last game, but we thought we played well the game before. We're trying to get this together."

"We knew it was a big game...we came prepared," Bryant said. "The first half we came out and did the things we needed to do to get ourselves emotionally into the game. It was a nice win for us."

Mutombo had 14 points and eight rebounds and was 6-of-6 from the field, but made just 2-of-8 from the foul line. The Hawks connected on just 12-of-21 free throws.

"Throughout the game our free-throw shooting was horrendous," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said.

Smith scored 25 points and Laettner added 18 and nine boards for the Hawks, who had their four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 10-3 at home.

Atlanta, which fell to 11-2 in games decided by six points or less, committed 16 turnovers, including Laettner's seven and four by Mutombo.

"I would not say it's disappointing, we played hard and we lost," Mutombo said. "We made a lot of turnovers, we kind of lost focus."

Bryant, who scored a career-high 33 points in Wednesday's loss at Chicago, has averaged 26.0 points over the last five games. Los Angeles has won four of those contests despite playing without superstar center Shaquille O'Neal, who remains sidelined with an abdominal strain.

The fourth quarter was tight throughout but Horry hit a layup with 5:07 to play, giving the Lakers the lead for good. Campbell and Bryant each followed with a pair of free throws for a 94-89 lead with 3:19 to go.

Blaylock ended the Hawks' brief scoring drought by hitting a jumper with 3:03 to go before Campbell's free throws pushed the lead back to five.

Blaylock had 12 points, nine assists and nine rebounds for the Hawks, who gave up a season-high 59 points in the first half but allowed a season-best 12 in the third period.

The Lakers owned a 69-65 edge midway through the third quarter but went scoreless for a 6:11 stretch late in the period. Atlanta took advantage with an 8-0 spurt, capped by Laettner's two free throws with 1:11 left.

Nick Van Exel scored 16 points and Horry had 13 and eight rebounds for the Lakers.
