GAME RECAP

Jerry Stackhouse scored a season-high 33 points in his Detroit debut, but it was not enough as the Pistons fell to the Indiana Pacers, 98-90.

The win was the fifth in a row and 14th in 17 games for Indiana, which improved to 16-8. After 24 games last season, the Pacers were 12-12.

Rik Smits scored 20 points, Reggie Miller had 17 and Dale Davis added 15 and 10 rebounds for the Pacers, who won their seventh consecutive game at Market Square Arena and improved to 10-2 at home.

"The first half we were awesome, no question about it. In the second half we got a big lead and relaxed a little bit. We got impatient and they got back in it," said Indiana coach Larry Bird. "We went out there with one thing in mind and that was to win and keep the streak going. After a 2-5 start I knew we were good enough to win some games. It was just whether we were up to the challenge, and we responded."

Stackhouse, playing in his first game with the Pistons since being acquired in a four-player trade with Philadelphia on Thursday, hit 13-of-20 shots from the field and all seven of his free throws in 30 minutes off the bench. Brian Williams chipped in with 25 points and 14 boards and Grant Hill added 20 points and seven assists for Detroit, which dropped its third straight game.

"I was anxious to get out and play with these guys. I haven't really had a chance to practice, but I think I can take a lot of pressure off Grant," said Stackhouse. "After hearing about the trade I felt great. It was a Christmas present come early. I'm very happy. I think we will be a very good team after we jell a bit."

"He's still trying to get adjusted but he's picked things up well," said Hill about his new teammate. "He's going to create opportunities for everyone, offensively and defensively. He's a welcome addition. We have three guys now who can score 20 points every night."

Indiana took a 23-17 after the first quarter and built up it up to as much as 13 points, 44-31, with 42 seconds left in the first half following a fast break dunk by Fred Hoiberg. Stackhouse then made two free throws for the 44-33 halftime score.

Detroit cut the deficit back to 50-41 with 8:40 remaining in the third quarter, but a 7-0 Pacers spurt four minutes later, finishing with a Chris Mullin free throw, made it 64-47 Pacers.

A pair of Miller free throws gave Indiana an 88-74 advantage with 3:30 left in the game, but the Pistons countered with a 13-4 run, capped off by a 12-footer by Stackhouse to cut the deficit to 92-87 with 61 seconds remaining. Stackhouse had 11 of Detroit's 13 points during the burst.

Five points was as close as the Pistons got in the final minute, after Smits and Jackson hit two free throws apiece and Antonio Davis added a layup with 17.2 seconds left.

"The Pacers are a terrific team. I don't know if anyone is playing any better in the East right now," said Detroit coach Doug Collins. "We have three terrific scorers. We just need some other guys to step up and contribute.

"The Davis brothers were terrific tonight. I don't know if I've seen Dale Davis play better offensively."
