GAME RECAP

Kevin Willis had 28 points and 10 rebounds and Charles Barkley added 23 and 16 as the Houston Rockets posted their eighth straight win at home, 116-98 over the Sacramento Kings.

Eddie Johnson and Mario Elie added 14 points apiece for the Rockets, who defeated the Kings for the sixth consecutive time dating back to last season.

Mitch Richmond scored 24 points and Corliss Williamson added 17 for Sacramento, which suffered its eighth straight loss on the road, dropping its record to 1-11 away from Arco Arena.

"They knocked down some big shots and our rotations broke down. We couldn't stop anyone and Kevin and Charles took over the game," said Richmond. "We felt pretty good about our shooting (the Kings shot 52 percent by making 42-of-81 attempts), but we just couldn't stop them on the other end."

The Rockets hit on 53 percent (42-for-80) of their shots from the field and were 10-for-26 from three-point range.

After Williamson's jumper tied the game, 85-85, with 9:16 left in the fourth quarter, Houston gained control with a 10-4 run over the next three minutes.

Emanual Davis, who had 11 points, began the spurt with a three-point play to give the Rockets an 88-85 lead with 8:51 left. Barkley finished it off with a pair of layups, the last with 6:18 to go to make it 97-89. The Kings could pull no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

"Sacramento shot well in the first half but their inexperience showed down the stretch, and in the fourth quarter they could not stop us," said Willis. "Our bench did a tremendous job tonight, Emanual and Eddie were great."

"We played hard, but in the second half they took over the game," said Williamson. "Their post game was going for them and then they kicked it out and started making the open shots. That really hurt our momentum."

The Kings raced to a 29-20 lead at the end of the first quarter, with help from a 10-0 run. Anthony Johnson capped it off with a jumper with 48 seconds left in the quarter, turning an 18-17 deficit into a 27-18 lead.

During the course of that Sacramento spurt, Houston guard Clyde Drexler was ejected for arguing with officials.

"We felt that we might have an advantage at that point but their bench played well," said Richmond. "We had to double and we really got hurt on that."

With 9:49 left in the first half, the Kings stretched their lead to 35-24 when Lawrence Funderburke connected on a 12-footer.

Later in the second quarter the Rockets answered with a 14-2 run over a three-minute juncture, turning a 43-33 Sacramento lead into a 47-45 Houston advantage with 2:38 remaining in the quarter following two free throws by Willis. The Kings scored six of the next eight points to take a 51-49 lead at intermission.

Sacramento's biggest lead of the third quarter was six points, 55-49, with 10:55 left after Billy Owens' layup.

Houston came back to take a 69-65 lead at the 4:16 mark of the quarter following a three-pointer by Matt Maloney. The Rockets entered the fourth quarter with a 79-77 edge.

"We have to keep stepping it up, regardless of the circumstances," said Eddie Johnson referring to Drexler's ejection. "We had to seize our opportunity after he got tossed. I felt like we more than made up for it tonight. We simply got the job done and we had a good rhythm going.

"We have a very nice combination of veterans and young guys. I feel that Kevin right now is playing the best of anyone in the league. He's been virtually unstoppable down low."
