GAME RECAP

Calbert Cheaney scored eight of his 16 points in a 20-2 first quarter run and the Washington Wizards coasted to a 106-86 rout of the Charlotte Hornets and remained unbeaten at the MCI Center.

Juwan Howard scored 26 points and Chris Webber had 24 points and a season-high 19 rebounds for the Wizards, who improved to 7-0 in their new building. Washington was 0-5 at home in the USAir Arena before moving to the MCI Center.

"It's no longer the new building, it's us," said Webber. "We've turned up the intensity. We're just trying to play as hard as we can."

The loss snapped the Hornets' five-game winning streak.

"It's one of those games," said Charlotte coach Dave Cowens. "You win five, you lose one, what's the difference if you lose by two or 18, it's still a loss. They beat Utah here. They beat Miami here. They beat the dickens out of them, so we're not the only team."

Charlotte's Glen Rice, who averaged 26.5 points in two previous games against Washington this year, was held to 13 points on 5-of-16 shooting from the field. The Hornets are 2-7 when Rice fails to score 20 or more points.

"We just didn't play good at all tonight," said Rice. "You run into nights like that. Tonight was our night where we couldn't get anything going. Nothing really went our way."

Dell Curry led Charlotte with 14 points.

The Hornets jumped to an 8-2 lead after a three-pointer by Rice 3:06 into the game. But Cheaney hit two short jumpers and a pair of layups as the Wizards outscored Charlotte, 20-2, the rest of the quarter.

"I'm trying to be more aggressive, and take my shots and get to the basket more," said Cheaney. "I'm just going to come out and when I get the ball, be aggressive."

The only Hornet basket in the spurt was a 21-foot jumper by David Wesley which tied the game, 10-10, at the 5:35 mark. The Bullets scored the final 12 points of the quarter to take a 22-10 lead.

Charlotte hit just 4-of-21 shots in the quarter while the Wizards shot at a 50 percent clip (11-of-22).

Washington then started the second quarter with a 12-3 run to increase the lead to 34-13. Tracy Murray hit two three-pointers and a pair of free throws to spark the spurt.

"A lot of people have been coming into the Phone Booth (nickname for MCI Center) but nobody's left a winner," said Murray. "We played well. We've been playing well. Now we just need to take our show on the road and put it together there."

The Hornets pulled within 13, 38-25, after a layup by J.R. Reid with 6:22 left in the half. But the Wizards then went on a 16-3 run to open their biggest lead of the half at 54-28. Howard scored 10 points in the spurt, including a pair of three-point plays.

Washington led by 19 at halftime, 60-41, and increased the advantage to 86-62 after three quarters.

The Hornets pulled no closer than 18 points in the fourth quarter. After a three-pointer by Dell Curry with 8:15 left made it 88-70, the Wizards went on a 12-2 run to open their biggest lead of the game at 100-72.
