GAME RECAP

Alonzo Mourning recorded 21 points and 12 rebounds and Tim Hardaway had 18 points, 13 assists and a club-record eight steals as the Miami Heat downed the Atlanta Hawks, 99-92, in a battle of Eastern Conference division leaders.

Isaac Austin chipped in 18 points off the bench as Miami won its second game in a row after losing three of four. The Heat also have won four of their last five at home and beat the Hawks for the third straight time overall and in Miami.

"It was two tired teams playing real aggressive and a very physical game," said Miami coach Pat Riley. "But the difference tonight was that we had two or three real good spurts in the second half. What else can you say about Tim? He's a great player and he's more conscious about having more patience in the last couple of games."

Steve Smith tallied 23 points and Dikembe Mutombo had 19 and 15 boards for Atlanta, which has lost two in a row following a four-game winning streak. The Hawks, who also had a three-game road winning streak halted, played without starting point guard Mookie Blaylock, who has a strained groin.

Hardaway netted 10 points in the first quarter as Miami assumed a 27-25 edge, and settled for a 49-49 tie at the intermission. Mourning then helped blow open the game by scoring seven points in an 18-5 run to start the third period, including a layup that gave the Heat a 67-54 lead with 4:39 to go.

"I really didn't care if I started or not, I just wanted to contribute and help us win," said Mourning, who was starting for the first time in three games this year. "There are no egos on this team. No one cares about things like that. We came out in the third with the attitude that we wanted to make some stops and get that defensive intensity."

Hardaway, who tied a career high in steals, also set a club record by registering five in the third quarter. The Heat were 12-of-19 from the field in the period, while Atlanta was just 4-for-20 and trailed 78-67 heading into the final quarter.

"The hands were working extra quick because I was out of gas, I couldn't shoot," said Hardaway, who had just four points in the second half. "Tonight was a night to come out and establish ourselves against a good team. It wasn't about having a good Christmas break off."

The Hawks did not fold, rallying within 91-88 on Smith's jumper with just over four minutes to play. However, Voshon Lenard stepped up and nailed two jumpers around two free throws and Hardaway converted a breakaway layup following Mourning's block to bump the margin to 99-88 with 1:44 remaining.

"The group that was out there (in the fourth quarter) got us back into the game, got us back to within three points," said Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens. "We needed that group on the floor because that's the group that got us back to where we had a chance."

Jamal Mashburn contributed 14 points and Lenard had 11 for the Heat, who committed just nine turnovers, but were outrebounded, 45-37.

Eldridge Recasner, starting in place of Blaylock, totaled 11 points and a career-best 11 assists, while Chucky Brown tallied 12 points for Atlanta, which shot just 37 percent (30-of-81) from the floor, but 85 percent (29-of-34) from the foul line.
