GAME RECAP

Avery Johnson scored a season-high 21 points and dished out 10 assists as the San Antonio Spurs avenged their worst loss of the season and won their season-best fifth straight game, 100-87 over the Houston Rockets.

Rookie Tim Duncan chipped in 20 points and 10 boards for San Antonio, which has put together its longest winning streak in two seasons following a 108-78 pasting at Houston on December 9th. The Spurs ended a four-game skid against the Rockets and beat them at home for the first time since February 1996.

"We played well tonight, we wanted this game," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. "We'd been playing well. Tonight was important because it was a measuring stick to see if what we are doing is real, and it is. Right now we are going to enjoy the win, but tomorrow it is back to work."

Clyde Drexler, who was ejected in the first quarter of Friday's win over Sacramento, recorded 26 points and 10 rebounds and Charles Barkley had 22 and 14 for Houston, which had won two in a row and 11 of 13.

"We played last night and you can tell," said Barkley. "You just saw a whole team get their butt kicked. They ran us into the ground and we played like an old team tonight."

Houston took a 19-17 lead on Barkley's basket with 3:19 left in the opening quarter before the Spurs took the lead for good with an 11-2 run. Jaren Jackson had a three-pointer in the spurt, which was capped by Johnson's bucket with 53 seconds to go that made it 28-21.

The Rockets trailed 28-24 after 12 minutes and remained within striking distance for the first eight-plus minutes of the second quarter before Jackson hit consecutive three-pointers and Sean Elliott nailed one to extend the lead to 53-37 with two minutes to play in the half.

Jackson had 12 of his 14 points in the first half as San Antonio led 55-40. The closest Houston came in the second half was 13 points on two occassions, while Johnson's basket with 7:46 remaining in the game gave the Spurs their biggest lead at 88-67.

"We've got to keep going, this was a game we really needed to boost our confidence," said Johnson. "We wanted a solid victory, they're dangerous and we have to play them two more times this year."

Johnson also recorded a season-high four steals, Elliott scored a season-best 20 points and David Robinson totaled 11 points and eight rebounds for San Antonio. The Spurs made just 9-of-22 free throws (41 percent), but committed a season-low 10 turnovers.

"We moved the ball well, and that's why we won the last five," said Elliott. "We also shared the ball real well. We made some mistakes, but the key was we kept up our energy level."

Kevin Willis finished with 18 points and seven boards for Houston, which shot just under 40 percent (31-of-78) from the field, including 2-for-21 from three-point range. The Rockets also dished out only 10 assists and received 15 points from the bench.

"We couldn't find the basket tonight," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "We had open shots and we usually make them. We shot for the lowest percentage I can remember for a while from the three-point line. They played with energy. Every time we had a semi-run, they would hit a spot shot."
