GAME RECAP

Kobe Bryant scored 19 points off the bench as the Los Angeles Lakers capped a successful road trip by beating the Houston Rockets for the third time this season, 94-83.

Elden Campbell collected 18 points and 14 rebounds and Eddie Jones added 17 points for the Lakers, who had six players in double figures and capped a 4-1 trip without injured All-Star center Shaquille O'Neal. Los Angeles won at Minnesota, Atlanta and Charlotte with just a loss at Chicago and is a league-best 11-5 on the road.

"This was a fun road trip," Bryant said. "We had back-to-back (games), then we had a day off, then we went back-to-back. It was so much fun for me, I'm realy enjoying this run."

Clyde Drexler scored 17 points and Charles Barkley added 14 and 21 rebounds for the Rockets, who had won eight straight at home since a loss to the Lakers on November 14th. Houston was just 12-of-40 (30 percent) in the second half.

"I thought this was the first game where they really beat us," Drexler said. "They played really well from start to finish. I thought the difference between the two halves was that we didn't make our shots in the second half and they shot the ball really well."

Drexler hit a three-pointer with 9:02 left in the third quarter to give the Rockets their largest lead at 56-47. But Jones answered with a three-pointer 20 seconds later to ignite an 18-4 burst over the next 6:29. Jones had six points and Campbell five in the spurt, which Campbell capped with a three-point play for a 65-60 Lakers lead with 2:13 remaining in the period.

Houston cut it to 70-66 after three and got the first two points of the fourth after a pair of free throws by Barkley. Bryant drilled another three-pointer, but Brent Price and Barkley had buckets around a basket by Campbell as Houston stayed within 75-72 with nine minutes to go.

But Los Angeles put the game away behind Bryant and Rick Fox. Bryant scored the first four points and Fox had the last four of an 8-0 run over a 1:52 span as the Lakers opened an 83-72 bulge with 6:15 to play. Houston got no closer than eight points thereafter.

Drexler and Kevin Willis combined for 10 first-quarter points, helping Houston race to a 20-14 lead. The Rockets led by as much as 11 in the second quarter before settling for a 49-40 halftime lead behind eight points from Barkley, Willis and Price.

"We had so many mental errors in the first half," Los Angeles coach Del Harris said. "I think it was due to road fatigue. But the guys kept working hard and they were never lazy. I told them at halftime that if we kept up that effort, than we would win the game."

Fox finished with 16 points and former Rocket Robert Horry chipped in with 12 for the Lakers, who shot 51 percent in the second half to finish at 47 percent (37-of-78). Nick Van Exel recorded 10 points and 10 assists.

Price and Matt Bullard had 13 points apiece and Willis contributed 12 for the Rockets, who shot 38.5 percent (30-of-78), negating a 47-36 rebounding advantage.
