GAME RECAP

Michael Jordan recorded 24 points and 11 rebounds and Toni Kukoc scored six of his 19 points in a key fourth-quarter run that propelled the Chicago Bulls to their sixth straight victory, 90-80 over the Miami Heat.

The Bulls led 69-64 after three quarters and were up 73-70 before Miami's Tim Hardaway hit his third three-pointer of the period to even the score with 7:51 to play.

Kukoc then had a layup to ignite a 13-2 burst, which featured five points from Scott Burrell and was capped by Dennis Rodman's layup with 3:17 left that made it 86-75.

"All I know, it was 78-up, we had a chance to win, we were right there and we turned the ball over four of the next five possessions," said Miami coach Pat Riley. "Couple that with some bad shots and we were down nine quickly. They've got our number. Even without (Scottie) Pippen, their system runs well. Ultimately, Michael (Jordan) is always the equalizer."

The Bulls have won 10 of their last 12 games following an 8-7 start to pull within one game of Atlanta for the lead in the Central Division. Chicago has also won nine in a row at the United Center and owns the best home mark in the league (13-1).

"I don't know if we are ready to go on a big roll or not," said Bulls coach Phil Jackson. "But at least we are threatening to go into the lead in our own conference. We've had a stretch of home games that have helped us. Hopefully, we can continue that."

Jamal Mashburn netted 20 points and Hardaway had 18 and 11 assists for Miami, which had a two-game winning streak come to an end. The Heat had won the last two regular-season meetings, but fell to 3-15 all-time in Chicago.

"We were right there," said Hardaway. "We tied it up and even had a chance to go ahead, but we didn't. It's unfortunate that we couldn't win this game. But it's still just a game in December. We had open shots and a chance to win. We just didn't hit them."

Mashburn tallied eight points in the first 12 minutes as the Heat took a 21-14 lead into the second quarter. They were still up 29-22 until Jordan scored seven points in an 11-2 surge that put Chicago ahead 33-31 on Rodman's basket with 3:29 to go.

Jordan netted 11 of his 13 first-half points in the second quarter as the Bulls assumed a 42-36 advantage at the intermission.

Ron Harper chipped in 10 points, while Rodman grabbed 13 rebounds as Chicago won the battle of the boards, 53-34. The Bulls made just 2-of-10 three-point tries and were 22-for-31 from the foul line.

Alonzo Mourning tallied 16 points before fouling out with 3:15 remaining and Isaac Austin had 11 off the bench for Miami, which shot 41 percent (30-of-73) from the floor. P.J. Brown pulled down 11 rebounds.

"This gave us a merry Christmas for us and for Chicago," said Jordan. "We came out with good focus today. We never let their big scorers get into the game. The key, I thought, was keeping Alonzo (Mourning) off the boards. We did a fine job of taking away their inside game. It's always fun to play Miami or any Riley-coached team and we enjoyed winning this game."

The teams were meeting for the first time since last season's Eastern Conference finals.
