GAME RECAP

Derek Harper scored a season-high 26 points and Mark Price added eight of his 17 in the third quarter as the Orlando Magic ended a season-high five-game losing streak with a 96-87 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

The 36-year-old Harper and the 32-year-old Price, the league's oldest backcourt, combined to carry Orlando to its first win since December 11th. Harper scored 16 points in the first half and Price keyed a 10-2 run that opened the third quarter and gave the Magic control for good.

"I tried to come out with a more aggressive mind-set, try and be aggressive, try and create some opportunities for myself and the rest of the guys on the team," Harper said. "It worked out."

"I don;t know if it was a statement," Price said. "I think it was our backs were against the wall. We needed it. It was a good win for us."

Rony Seikaly returned from a one-game absence due to the flu to collect 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Magic, who led by at least seven points over the final 22 minutes. Seikaly scored 10 points in the third quarter, when Orlando totaled 31 points and opened a 13-point lead.

"This is a team that does not want to lose," Seikaly said. "We have veteran players here. We don't have young guys who are just happy to be here. We have guys who are here to win and we want to win. That's the bottom line."

"I was mad today, before the game," Magic coach Chuck Daly said. "I was mad in the pregame because I don't like losing. I just hate losing. It's one of the reasons I left (coaching) before."

Glen Rice scored 29 points and Matt Geiger added a season-high 22 and nine rebounds for the Hornets, who have lost four of six overall and on the road. Charlotte has dropped nine of its last 10 against Orlando.

Seikaly's short jumper opened the second half and triggered the run. Price followed with a pair of layups, giving the Magic a 51-44 lead with 10:14 remaining. After a basket by Rice, Horace Grant made a 17-footer and Seikaly sank a jumper to extend the margin to 55-46 with 8:28 to go in the period.

A seven-foot runner by Price built Orlando's lead to 72-59 with 2:40 to play and the Magic settled for a 76-65 bulge entering the fourth quarter.

"We could not get a stop in the third quarter," Hornets coach Dave Cowens said. "I think they scored 11 times in a row."

Harper's three-pointer gave Orlando its largest lead at 83-68 with 6:54 left. The Hornets responded with a 14-6 run, capped by a basket by B.J. Armstrong, to cut the deficit to 89-82 with 1:23 to go. But Seikaly made a free throw seven seconds later and Darrell Armstrong added two more for a 10-point advantage with 59 seconds remaining.

"You have to pinpoint a lot of people, but particularly Harper," Daly said. "Mark Price maybe got tired of losing, but I saw a lot of tenacity in a lot of areas -- rebounding, particularly on the defensive end."

Grant grabbed 10 rebounds and Brian Evans scored eight of his 10 points in the final period for the Magic, who shot 49 percent (38-of-77) from the field and made 15-of-16 free throws. Harper was 4-of-6 from three-point range and Price had nine assists.

Divac pulled down 11 boards and Anthony Mason added nine for the Hornets, who shot 41 percent (32-of-78) and held a 45-34 edge on the glass. But Divac scored just eight points and Mason two on a combined 3-of-22 from the field. They entered averaging a combined 24.2 points per game.

"Mason is 0-for-7, then Vlade 3-for-15, that's 3-for-22, my two big guys," Cowens said. "A lot of those were right from the basket."

Harper's 10 first-quarter points helped Orlando to a 29-23 lead. But the 7-0 Geiger got loose for a handful of transition layups and scored 11 points in the second period as Charlotte closed to 45-44 at halftime.

"Derek really came out aggressive offensively. He really got us a good start in the first half," Price said. "Going in with a lead at halftime gave us some confidence in the second half."
