GAME RECAP

Stephon Marbury scored 10 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and the Minnesota Timberwolves rallied to defeat the Detroit Pistons 93-89, snapping a five-game losing streak at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Marbury's one-hander in the lane gave Minnesota its first lead of the game at 75-74 with 6:14 left. That shot capped a 10-0 run that began with a drive by Terry Porter at the 9:24 mark.

The teams traded baskets on the next six possessions, and Brian Williams gave Detroit its last lead at 82-81 with a turnaround jumper with 3:25 to go.

Marbury, who also had nine assists, then hit conseuctive buckets to give the Timberwolves the lead for good. He connected on a jumper with 2:57 left and a drive off the glass with 2:01 to go to give Minnesota an 85-82 advantage.

"We really came out flat. Then we picked it up at the end. If we keep playing like that, we can beat anybody," said Marbury. "When we came in at halftime we knew we were playing bad, but we were still in the game, so we came out and started executing and moving the ball."

Tom Gugliotta added 15 points and 13 rebounds and Sam Mitchell 12 points off the bench as the Timberwolves won in Detroit for the first time since February 13th, 1992. Minnesota also reached the .500 mark (14-14) for the first time since November 24th, when it was 6-6 after a win over Utah.

"We just weren't focused at the start. But we hung in there and went to our halfcourt trap and really spread out the game," said Minnesota coach Flip Saunders. "We made some big plays when they counted. We had to try and take away (Grant) Hill's ability to dominate the ball. When he's on like tonight, you have to do something to get the ball out of his hands."

Grant Hill hit 12-of-17 shots and finished with 27 points and Williams had 19 points and 16 rebounds for the Pistons, who lost for the fifth time in seven games.

"It's the same type of game, but it's just a different team. Maybe 1998 will change all this," said Hill. "They scored on 18 of their last 25 possessions. That's the bottom line.

"We were in control all night, but they were in control in the last five minutes. They played the last five minutes of the game the way you're supposed to. Last year we were the ones that did that."

Minnesota stretched its lead to 90-84 with 21 seconds left after Gugliotta connected on a foul-line jumper and hit one of two free throws.

Lindsey Hunter brought Detroit within 90-87 with a three-pointer from the corner with 17 seconds remaining.

On the inbounds play, Hunter was called for holding Marbury, who hit a free throw. Porter added another foul shot with 15 seconds to go to make it 92-87.

Jerry Stackhouse, who had missed his first eight shots, hit a follow shot to pull the Pistons to within 92-89 with 5.4 seconds left.

Marbury added a free throw and Hunter misfired on a three-point attempt at the buzzer. On his shot, Hunter pulled a calf muscle in his right leg and is listed as day-to-day.

"I could've just told him (Hunter) to throw the ball in at the end and give up, but I couldn't do that. I called a timeout, hoping that someone would hit a three and get fouled," said Detroit Coach Doug Collins. "Instead, Lindsey pulls a calf shooting a three. That's pretty much how this season has gone.

"We let them have 53 points in the second half. All season long we've been unable to stop teams in the clutch. And that was our hallmark last year. It isn't happening this year. It's probably cost us 12 games this season."

The Pistons extended their lead to 10 points three times in the second quarter, the last time at 45-35 with 45 seconds left in the half on a basket by Hill.

A fast-break layup by Hill maintained the lead at 57-47 with 8:43 left in the third quarter.

Minnesota countered with a 12-3 run to pull within 60-59 with 3:59 remaining in the third quarter. Chris Carr opened the spurt with a pair of free throws and closed it with a layup.
