GAME RECAP

Cedric Ceballos scored 21 points and Cliff Robinson netted 12 of his 18 in the second half and the Phoenix Suns shot a sizzling 72 percent in the final quarter to hold off the Boston Celtics, 100-90.

The Suns built slightly on a 68-65 lead after three quarters before Boston's Dana Barros narrowed the gap to 72-69 just 31 seconds into the fourth period. But Robinson sparked a 12-2 run with a follow shot off his own missed free throw and Phoenix kept a double-digit lead thereafter.

"I tried to stay aggressive, especially around the glass," said Robinson, who had nine rebounds before fouling out with three minutes to go. "I tried to create shot opportunities. That started the run. We did a really good job of feeding off of each other, playing defense and attacking their pressure."

"Cliff Robinson was huge both offensively and defensively," Suns coach Danny Ainge said. "This was definitely Ced's (Ceballos) type of game; he gave us a huge lift."

Jason Kidd and Rex Chapman, who were a combined 1-for-9 from the floor entering the fourth quarter, turned it around and hit 7-of-8 shots as the Suns drained 13-of-18 from the field in winning for the fifth time in six games.

Antoine Walker had 28 points and 12 rebounds and Bruce Bowen added 14 points for Boston (14-14), which was thwarted in an attempt to match last season's win total.

Boston took its only lead early, going ahead 5-4 before Robinson and Ceballos carried the Suns on a 10-2 run. Ceballos scored 10 in the first quarter and Robinson added six.

The Suns extended their three-point lead after one period to a 47-40 advantage at the break.

Walter McCarty had 13 points and seven rebounds and Andrew Declerq added 11 points for the Celtics, who had won five of its last six games. Declerq also had five of the Celtics' 21 steals as Boston forced the Suns into committing a season-high 24 turnovers.

"I don't know how many turnovers we had in that game," Ainge said, "but it was a circus out there. I thought we did great except it seemed like one guy would get lazy or fatigued, and it was a different guy each time."

With 10:50 left, Robinson -- a 66 percent free-throw shooter this season -- missed both from the line, but fought his way through the lane for the follow that swung the momentum Phoenix's way. Steve Nash followed with a jumper before rookie Chauncey Billups pulled the Celtics within 78-71 with nine minutes to play.

"We didn't block out at the foul line," said Celtics coach Rick Pitino. "That's what happened when we were down three and we could have pushed it to one, but they scored the follow up shots. It's really disappointing not blocking out."

The Suns took a double-digit lead for good when Kidd nailed a three-pointer, Robinson hit a free throw and Chapman followed with a basket as the Suns built an 84-71 advantage.

"This is a game we should have won," claimed McCarty. "They got some easy breaks from rebounds on the free-throw line and a lot of second chances that really killed us."

Chapman finished with 10 points and Kidd added seven, eight rebounds and eight assists for the Suns, who also got 14 points from Nash off the bench. Phoenix shot 53 percent (41-of-77) from the field and outrebounded Boston, 52-42.

Walker, Billups, and rookie Ron Mercer shot a combined 15-for-42 from the field for Boston, which hit just 38 percent (33-of-86) overall.
