GAME RECAP

Allen Iverson scored 29 points and had 11 assists and Jim Jackson and rookie Tim Thomas provided all the scoring in a fourth-quarter spurt as the Philadelphia 76ers recovered from a slow start to beat the Vancouver Grizzlies, 115-104.

Jackson finished with 21 points, Mark Davis had 16 and Thomas 15 for the 76ers, who posted a season-high point total and improved to 2-2 on their seven-game road trip, with both wins coming against sub-.500 teams.

"They had a size advantage on us, but we might have had an advantage on the other end in quickness," Philadelphia coach Larry Brown said. "When Allen plays like that, he makes everybody better. That was one of his better games in a long time. We shared the ball and it looked like it got contagious, which is good."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim collected 23 points, 12 rebounds and six assists and Blue Edwards added 21 points for the Grizzlies, who matched their longest losing streak of the season with their fourth straight loss. Vancouver has dropped seven of its last eight games and is a season-worst 11 games under .500.

"We need a win real bad," Abdur-Rahim said. "We just have to get everything back on the right track."

Philadelphia has beaten Vancouver four straight times since dropping the first meeting between the teams.

Vancouver had a 79-76 lead with 1:46 left in the third quarter before Philadelphia scored the final six points of the period. Iverson had four of his 12 third-quarter points in that span, including a jumper with 31 seconds remaining that gave the Sixers an 82-79 lead entering the final period.

Jackson and Thomas opened the fourth by combining for eight straight points. Jackson began the quarter with a jumper and Thomas dunked for an 86-79 lead with 10:50 to play. After two free throws by Jackson with 10:21 to go, Thomas capped the run with a bucket with 9:14 left, giving Philadelphia a 90-79 lead.

Lee Mayberry ended the spurt with a basket, bringing the Grizzlies within 90-81 with 8:56 remaining. But Thomas, who had eight points in the fourth, buried a three-pointer for a 93-81 advantage 22 seconds later. Vancouver got no closer than nine points thereafter.

Vancouver led by as much as 13 points in the first quarter, the final time at 23-10 after Abdur-Rahim's layup with 6:06 left in the period. The Grizzlies shot a blistering 66 percent en route to a 33-27 lead after one.

But Vancouver cooled off in the second quarter, hitting on just 36 percent. The Sixers used nine points from Iverson to seize a 57-56 halftime lead.

"I hit a couple of shots and coach kept going to me," Iverson said. "Once I got into a little groove I was able to help us out. I think more than my shots falling down, I had fun knowing that we won a basketball game."

"Any time you get down like that early in the game but still can come out of the first quarter only down six points, you escape something," Jackson said. "In this game the tide is gonna turn, and where it turned was on the defensive end."

Davis was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the line and Clarence Weatherspoon contributed 13 points for the Sixers, who shot 56 percent (44-of-79) and held a 46-32 rebounding advantage.

Otis Thorpe scored 15 points and rookie Antonio Daniels had 13 and nine assists for the Grizzlies, who shot 50 percent (39-of-78). Edwards started in place of Sam Mack, who missed the game with a sprained right hand.
