GAME RECAP

Mario Elie made a free throw with 1.7 seconds left in overtime to lift the Houston Rockets to a 116-115 victory over the Denver Nuggets, who matched a season high with their 12th straight loss.

Elie missed his second free throw but Matt Maloney grabbed the rebound and dribbled out the clock as the Rockets won for the fifth time in the last six meetings with the Nuggets, including three straight at Denver.

"What a crazy game," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "We fought really hard to get a lead and fell apart. Denver played their butts off. We were very fortunate, with the emphasis on very, to get a win. I didn't know what to expect in this game, it was as crazy as it gets."

Kevin Willis had a season-high 33 points and 19 rebounds and Charles Barkley added 21 points, 14 boards and eight assists for the Rockets. Clyde Drexler had 21 points and seven assists for Houston, which ended a four-game road losing streak.

"My game is good enough to get a win," Willis said. "Denver played extremely well. They almost had the game until Brent Price hit the huge three to go to overtime. I kept pushing the offensive glass, I missed a few I shouldn't have, but I'll take them."

LaPhonso Ellis and Harold Ellis had season-highs of 26 and 22 points, respectively, for the Nuggets, who are two games from matching the worst losing streak in franchise history.

The Nuggets tied the game, 115-115, when Johnny Newman hit a pair of free throws with 11.2 seconds to go. Newman, who had 15 points, gave Denver a 108-107 edge when he made a three-pointer with 3:14 left. Willis answered with a 14-footer 18 seconds later and Barkley made one free throw, giving the Rockets a 110-108 lead with 2:07 remaining. A tip-in by Willis after Barkley missed the second free throw increased Houston's lead to 112-108.

Rookie Bobby Jackson, who had 20 points, made a layup to cut Houston's lead to 112-110 with 79 seconds left but Barkley answered with two free throws 20 seconds later. Jackson sank a 17-footer to make it 114-112 with 54 seconds to go and LaPhonso Ellis made one free throw to draw Denver within 114-113 with 23.4 seconds remaining. Drexler made a free throw with 16.1 seconds to play before Newman tied the game for the final time.

"It's a New Year thing, we came out and played hard and we should've won it," Jackson said. "Hopefully, we can learn from this and carry it through better next time individually and as a team."

The Rockets held a 100-90 lead when Willis made a free throw with 2:50 left in the fourth period but LaPhonso Ellis had a tip-in to trigger a 13-0 burst. Jackson had six points during the run, including a pair of free throws that capped it for a 103-100 lead with 6.1 seconds to go. Brent Price, who had four assists off the bench, hit a three-pointer with 3.4 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

"That was buzzards luck tonight," said Denver coach Bill Hanzlik. "We told them at the end of regulation to not go inside the three-point line. Let them get a layup, but still Price got a good look. We made an 11-0 run, it was a great comeback. We had an unbelievable comeback. We were having trouble with the double team by going too early, and they were killing us on it. But once we figured that out, our defense was pretty good."
