GAME RECAP

Gary Payton scored 15 points and dished out nine assists over three quarters as the Seattle SuperSonics improved on the NBA's best record with their 11th straight win over the Philadelphia 76ers, 90-73.

Payton had eight points in the decisive first quarter, capping an 18-8 run with a basket that put the Sonics ahead for good, 20-10. Seattle led 55-36 at halftime and built a 26-point cushion several times in the third and fourth quarters en route to their 10th victory in 11 games.

"They could have beat us by 50," admitted 76ers coach Larry Brown. "(Seattle coach) George Karl pulled the horses off. We couldn't make a pass and every shot we took was contested. We didn't challenge them defensively... it was like the Varsity against the J.V."

The Sonics (25-6) won their fifth consecutive game against Eastern Conference teams and improved to 13-2 at home. They are one game ahead of the second-place Los Angeles Lakers in the Pacific Division.

Theo Ratliff had 12 points and eight rebounds and rookie Kebu Stewart added 11 points for the 76ers, who were held to a season-low in scoring for both the game and the third quarter (11). Philadelphia has lost nine of its last 11 contests.

Sixers guard Allen Iverson left with a cut on the inside of his mouth with 5:50 to go in the third quarter. He connected on just 3-of-9 from the field for just nine points and had six turnovers in 24 minutes before taking a shot to the mouth from teammate Ratliff. The 76ers shot just 34 percent (25-of-74) overall.

"Our emphasis was to come out more aggressively on defense, and I thought we did well tonight," said Karl, whose team forced 25 turnovers and converted them into 24 points. "You're getting into the part of the season where if you just come out and do your job and work hard, you get good results. We've got a lot of weapons, we shoot the ball well and have good post-up situations."

After Iverson pulled the Sixers within 43-32 with 3:48 left in the first half, Detlef Schrempf ignited a 12-4 burst that gave the Sonics their 19-point lead at the break. Seattle continued to pour it on in the third, opening up with a 11-4 run. Hersey Hawkins hit one of two from the line with 4:24 remaining to cap the surge and give the Sonics a 66-40 cushion.

Schrempf had 13 points and Hawkins and Vin Baker scored 11 each for Seattle, which hit 46 percent (36-of-79) of its shots. Sixth man Dale Ellis finished with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Ellis, who has been on fire from three-point range, hit his lone effort from behind the arc. He has made 21 of his last 25 three-point attempts.

"It's tough sometimes to get up emotionally for a team that you're supposed to blow out," Schremp conceded. "We weren't quite ready in the first quarter. But we got into it as the game went on and played better defensively."

In his return from a two-game suspension for fighting, Philadelphia's Derrick Coleman turned the ball over nine times and scored six points.
