GAME RECAP

David Robinson scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and the San Antonio Spurs capitalized on a decisive run early in the fourth quarter to post an 84-77 victory of the Miami Heat that matched their win total from last season.

Rookie Tim Duncan added 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Spurs (20-11), who won for the third straight time and 10th in 11 games. San Antonio matched its win total from a season ago, when Robinson missed all but six games with back and foot ailments.

Alonzo Mourning scored 18 points to lead the Heat before leaving with a hand injury late in the third quarter. Mourning suffered a gash on his left hand with 20 seconds remaining when he hit his hand on the rim attempting to block a shot. He received seven stitches and did not return.

Voshon Lenard hit a running jumper in the lane with one second left in the third quarter which gave Miami a 64-62 advantage entering the final period. After the Spurs tied it on a Duncan layup, Tim Hardaway's jumper gave the Heat their last lead of the game at 66-64 with 11:08 to go.

Robinson's layup with 10:17 left fueled a 10-1 spurt and tied the game at 66-66. Jaren Jackson's jumper at the 9:46 mark gave the Spurs the lead for good. After Terry Mills sank one of two free throws to cut the deficit to 68-67, Jackson hit a jumper, Robinson had a dunk and Monty Williams' jumper capped the spurt that gave San Antonio a 74-67 lead with 6:49 to play.

"The Heat are one of the best executing teams in the league and we responded well," Robinson said. "This is a breathrough win against a team like this. Our goal is to establish ourselves both at home and on the road. We're making great progress."

Chuck Person, who finished with 17 points, drilled a three-pointer with 3:50 left, giving the Spurs their biggest lead of the game 82-72. Hardaway hit a jumper and Lenard nailed three free throws after he was fouled on a three-point attempt to bring the Heat within 82-77 with 1:06 to play, but they could get no closer.

Duncan didn't think Mourning's absence in the final quarter was the deciding factor in the game.

"I thought we had momentum going into the fourth quarter anyway," he said. "We were going in that direction."

San Antonio held the Heat to only four field goals and 13 points in the final period. The Spurs also limited Miami to only 15 points in the second quarter.

The Spurs led 25-24 after one quarter and they held a 45-39 halftime advantage behind 16 points from Robinson and 14 from Duncan.

Miami trailed 49-41 early in the third quarter before embarking on a 12-4 burst that knotted the game 53-53 with 6:25 to play in the quarter. Mourning and Jamal Mashburn contributed five points apiece in the run.

Mashburn scored 17 points and Lenard finished with 16 for the Heat, who were limited to only 38 percent (29-of-76) from the field. Lenard also led Miami with nine rebounds.

"It was an awful loss. I can't characterize it any other way," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "The big guys (Duncan and Robinson) absolutely dominated us."

Robinson hit 11-of-18 shots and Duncan connected on 10-of-19 attempts for San Antonio, which shot 48 percent (34-of-71) from the floor. The Spurs also held a 41-38 rebounding edge.

San Antonio forward Sean Elliot left the game in the third quarter with a strained groin and did not return.
