GAME RECAP

Brian Grant drained the go-ahead jumper with eight seconds to play and Isaiah Rider scored 10 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter as the Portland Trail Blazers rallied for a 97-95 victory over the struggling Houston Rockets.

Clyde Drexler scored 13 of his 34 points in the final period and reeled off six in a row to give Houston a 91-84 lead with 3:35 to play.

Rider answered with a long jumper before Grant's three-point play cut the deficit to two with 1:38 to go. Drexler responded with two free throws, but Rider drilled a three-pointer to pull Portland within 93-92.

"It almost never is more exciting than that," Rider said. "It came down to a possession-by-possession game. We outscored them in the last two minutes and that decided the game."

Drexler fed Mario Elie for a driving basket with 51 seconds remaining, but Rasheed Wallace, just a 13-percent shooter from behind the arc, drained the tying three-pointer 12 seconds later, just his third of the season.

After Drexler failed to convert a drive on the other end, Grant had his shot blocked by Kevin Willis but grabbed the loose ball and hit a five-footer in the lane to put Portland in front.

"I got the ball and tried to put it up quick, but Willis blocked it," Grant said. "No one seemed to want to go to the ball, so I got it and shot it again. It was a reaction thing."

Drexler's pull-up 15-footer was off the mark, Charles Barkley blew a tip-in and time expired as the teams scrambled for the loose ball.

"I got a good look, but it didn't go in," Drexler said. "We got a couple of tips, and then we were scrambling and that's the ball game."

Wallace had 20 points and nine rebounds and Grant added 16 and 11 as Portland won for the fourth time in its last five trips to Houston, which has lost four of its last six games.

Willis was averaging 25 points over the last four games, but was held to just seven on 2-of-10 shooting. Houston, which shot 47 percent (36-of-77) from the field, lost for the third time in its last four home games despite committing a season-low six turnovers.

"We don't have much margin for error. For instance, Kevin makes a great play and blocks Grant, but the ball goes right to the shooter," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "If the ball goes somewhere else, then we get it and we get the last shot."

The Rockets led by as many as 12 points in the second quarter but Portland took the lead with an 11-2 spurt early in the third. Wallace's dunk sparked the run and a layup by Arvydas Sabonis capped it with 6:36 left, giving Portland a 59-58 edge.

The game was back-and-forth from there, with another dunk by Wallace putting the Blazers on top, 84-83, with 6:03 to play.

But Elie and Drexler hit back-to-back layups to open an 8-0 spurt. Drexler sank two free throws and took a pass on the break from Barkley for an easy dunk, building the 91-84 cushion.

"It goes back to defense. We're not making the stops we need to make," said Barkley, who had 12 points and 12 rebounds. "We got the lead and then we couldn't stop them. We haven't made a critical stop all year."

Portland, which was held to a season low for points in Friday's 85-69 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, improved to 6-1 on the back end of games played in consecutive nights.

"Our guys do a good job of bouncing back the next night," said Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy. "We've come back when there were a lot of things going against us. I think it speaks a lot for these guys that they can perform under those conditions."

Sabonis contributed 16 points and 10 boards, helping Portland to a 45-39 edge on the glass.

Elie and Matt Bullard chipped in 12 points apiece for the Rockets, who are 1-2 against the Blazers this season.
