GAME RECAP

Brent Barry and Eric Piatkowski hit key three-pointers down the stretch as the Los Angeles Clippers held off a late rally to deal the hapless Dallas Mavericks their 15th straight loss, 97-88.

Dallas pulled within three points twice in the final two minutes, but first Barry and then Piatkowski answered from behind the arc to hold the Mavericks off and send them to their 13th consecutive road loss.

"Yeah, they were big shots at the end," said Barry. "But obviously it wasn't a shooting clinic by either team. Fortunately, we made some shots down the stretch to seal the victory."

Barry and Lamond Murray each scored 21 points and rookie Maurice Taylor added 15 for the Clippers, who hit their first seven shots from the field for a 16-0 lead and recorded their first three-game winning streak since last April.

"It's not like Dallas wasn't going to score points," Barry said. "They just didn't get them early. Then they came back, that's how this game is sometimes. You know you're not going to blow out a team and go up by 40 points in the first or second quarter."

"That was ugly, wasn't it?" asked Clippers coach Don Nelson, whose team fell to 1-15 under his reign. "They made their first six shots and we missed our first 10. It was the energy level, it just wasn't there."

Michael Finley had 21 points and Samaki Walker added a career-high 20 points and 13 rebounds for Dallas, which is in the midst of its longest skid since a 16-game slide from December 20th, 1993-January 27th, 1994.

The Clippers, who had lost eight of nine contests before their three-game surge, jumped out to the early lead. Murray had five points and Darrick Martin had five of his seven as Los Angeles took a 16-0 lead. Dallas missed its first 10 shots, finally getting on the scoreboard when reserve Eric Riley hit a free throw with 8:02 remaining.

Murray and Rodney Rogers grabbed 10 rebounds apiece and Stojko Vrankovic added eight as the Clippers' grabbed a season-high 52 boards. Rogers also contributed 11 points for Los Angeles, which hit 44 percent (42-of-96) of its shots and had a season-best 11 blocks.

Hubert Davis led Dallas back, hitting three jumpers in a 17-4 run that pulled the Mavs within 26-20 after one period.

The Clippers built a 55-42 halftime cushion, but the Mavericks gradually chipped away and nearly caught Los Angeles in the fourth quarter, pulling to within 76-74 on A.C. Green's bucket with 9:36 to play. The Clippers answered with buckets from Murray, Keith Closs and Taylor, extending their lead to 82-74 with 8:06 remaining.

"When I get the time I'll show you what I'm capable of doing," said Taylor. "When they call on me I'm always ready."

Dallas threatened again with just under five minutes when Davis sank a fast-break layup to cut the deficit to three points. Barry returned from a breather just over a minute later and drained a three-pointer for some breathing room. The Mavericks pulled 87-84 with under three minutes left before Piatkowski sparked a 10-4 game-ending run with a three-pointer.

"About time a (damned) three went in for me," Piatkowski said. "I think we're playing more team ball, we are't playing as erratic as we did at the beginning of the season."
